New Regulations for Foreign Workers in Austria in 2026
Austria hires skilled workers from outside the EU mainly through its points-based Red-White-Red Card, and the salary thresholds rose for 2026. This guide explains the latest rules for foreign workers in Austria in plain English.
The figures are updated each year, so always confirm the current thresholds before you act.
The Big Picture
Citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland can work in Austria freely. Other workers usually need a Red-White-Red Card, which is awarded on a points basis for qualifications, work experience, language skills, and age, and is combined with a job offer that meets a salary threshold.
New 2026 Salary Thresholds
From 1 January 2026, the main minimum gross salaries are:
- Red-White-Red Card (key employee): EUR 3,465 per month (up from EUR 3,225), unless a collective agreement requires more.
- EU Blue Card: EUR 55,678 per year, unless a collective agreement requires more.
- Very senior “super key”) Employees: EUR 8,316 per month.
From 1 June 2026, the highly qualified professional/local-hire category requires about EUR 54,142 per year for managers and directors, and about EUR 41,356 per year for specialists.
Collective Agreements Matter
Pay must always meet the level set by the applicable collective agreement, which may be higher than the permit threshold. The salary must also be sufficient to cover the worker’s and any dependents’ cost of living, and applicants may need to provide bank statements.
What Foreign Workers and Employers Should Do
- Check whether the job and qualifications score enough points for the Red-White-Red Card.
- Confirm the salary meets both the 2026 threshold and the relevant collective agreement.
- For higher earners, consider the EU Blue Card for greater mobility within the EU.
- Keep documents and proof of funds ready for the residence permit application.
