Ermoupoli, on Syros, is the seat of the South Aegean regional authority, and that fact alone shapes everything about recruiting here. Rhodes is the region's largest city. Santorini and Mykonos carry the tourism weight, with Kos a further large resort economy. Instead, Syros has administration, a town economy that runs through the winter, regional health services, the university’s engineering base, and a shipyard that builds, repairs, and upgrades commercial and naval fleets. So the structure is administration and heavy industry on one island, the volume of employment on four or five others, and sea or air travel between every pair of them.
Thirteen regional units are spread across two island groups, and in nearly every case the seat is across water from the employer. Patmos, Leros, Astypalaia, Leipsoi and Agathonisi answer to Pothia on Kalymnos. Kastellorizo, Symi, Tilos and Chalki answer to Rhodes city. Anafi, Folegandros, Ios and Sikinos answer to Fira on Santorini. Amorgos and the Lesser Cyclades answer to Naxos, and Serifos, Sifnos and Kimolos sit inside the Milos unit. Kos is paired with Nisyros, Karpathos with Kasos, Paros with Antiparos and Kea with Kythnos. The deconcentrated state authority for both Aegean regions is in Attica, so the mainland handles licences and inspections for an employer on Karpathos. An address here predicts neither the authority nor the journey to reach it.
Duration differs sharply between the routes. A group transfer runs for the posting or for one year, whichever is shorter, while the card for highly qualified employment runs three years and renews in further three-year terms. An employer planning a long assignment should not choose the transfer route just because the group relationship makes it convenient. The two are not interchangeable.
A consular post is the one actor outside the country, and it has a fixed job: it receives the approval and the signed contract, sees the worker in person, and issues the national visa. It does not reopen the merits. It also does not ask what the employer did to recruit at home, because nothing in the procedure requires it.
Admissibility and merit are different gates, and the act controls the first. A complete file from a solvent employer offering good terms still goes nowhere if the occupation it names is full. Employers used to systems where a strong application can win on quality find this the hardest feature of all to accept, and the most expensive to learn late.
We manage translation, legalisation, and the small mechanical requirements. So is the dull business of confirming that a document still satisfies the rule that applies now rather than the one that applied when a template was written. Nothing in that list involves influencing a decision, because nothing we could do would influence one.
Employers new to this system usually expect to find a regional allocation and a local test. Neither of those exists here. A post in Ermoupoli is tested against a national occupational ceiling, and the only local element in the procedure is which office handles the file.
There is no higher education presence on Santorini, Mykonos or Kos, the three islands with the deepest hospitality demand, so the islands that need those skills import them.
The university’s tourism management and shipping departments are in the other Aegean region, on Chios, so graduates trained outside it are what this region needs most.
Accommodation is the binding constraint and the single most decisive variable. Rental stock keeps converting to short-term lets, and shared lodging can be crowded, so employer housing separates two otherwise identical offers.
Hotels, villa managers, and builders all chase maintenance, electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning, and pool plant technicians at once, and they are the hardest technical grade on every resort island.
Marine engineers and qualified skippers for the charter fleet come from a small pool that every marina in both island groups fishes during the same weeks.
The ship repair and heavy engineering trades at Ermoupoli are on-the-job crafts rather than schooled ones, so the island can't respond to a sudden docking with newly trained hands.
On Milos, process, plant maintenance, and heavy equipment skills are trained in-house, making them hard to recruit from outside and slow to replace when someone leaves.
Candidates reach us through employer referrals, our own files, and intermediaries in the sending country, and we check every source the same way. The source is not the qualification. A warmly recommended candidate still has to match the coded occupation and provide the documents that go with it. Warmth is not evidence, and we treat every file identically.
Where a profession is regulated, screening stops at the competent body’s door. We determine which body must settle the qualification and whether the candidate has anything to present. We form no view of what it will say, and we do not offer a clinical post before it has spoken. Nor do we ask it to hurry, because it will not.
Two recognition routes exist, and they answer different questions. One establishes what a foreign academic qualification is equivalent to. The other deals with professional qualifications in regulated occupations, on a separate legal basis and through a separate procedure. An employer that obtains the first and assumes the second has obtained nothing it can rely on. The two words sound alike, and the procedures are not.
Software teams here work in English more often than not, making English a real requirement for a developer and a weak one for several people around them. Screening an entire organisation to the standard of its most international function is one of the most common ways to make a vacancy unfillable. The requirement belongs to the posts that actually use it.
Five things must be true before anyone is contacted. The occupation stands in the act now applying, with positions left against it. The employer can evidence its own conditions. The terms are settled and lawful. Any regulated-profession question has been put to the right body. Any driving duty has been tested against the exchange rules. None of the five is a matter of judgement.
Industry by industry, the sections below set out what is known about work in Ermoupoli. None of them is a statistic, and none names a firm: the focus is the trade, the post, and the conditions, which a recruitment plan needs.
Hotels recruit revenue assistants, concierges, food and beverage supervisors, guest relations agents, reservations agents, night auditors, housekeeping supervisorss, and laundry attendants at largee, charter-fed properties.
On Rhodes and Ko,,s the model is large properties fed by charter and scheduled flights, and booking windows have been pushed into early November because of flight availability.
A March to early November shape is the outer envelope on these two islands in a good year, longer than any Cycladic contract, so put the months in the advertisement.
Housekeepers and night staff hold keys to occupied rooms, so the checking matters more than the interview. Take a reference by telephone rather than by letter, ask specifically about reliability and keys, and keep a signed key register.
Agencies hire villa managers, villa cleaners, changeover team members, turnaround coordinators, property caretakers, gardeners, pool technicians, and laundry hands on the resort islands.
Smaller higher-rate properties on Santorini and Mykonos sit beside a large villa and short-let trade, and both islands stay busy into October rather than through November.
Treat these islands as April or May to October and say so, because a candidate who expects a Rhodes season and gets a Cycladic one loses two or three months of earnings.
Cleaning chemicals are classified products, so staff are trained before first use on dilution, labelling, and never mixing two of them, and this is recorded. Lone working in an empty property adds key accountability and a written way to report damage
Kitchens engage restaurant managers, sommeliers, baristas, bartenders, waiting staff, kitchen porters, pastry chefs and commis chefs in the year-round town trade and on the resort strips.
Ermoupoli, Rhodes city, and Kos town have year-round trade, while the resort strips are strictly seasonal and close with the hotels around them.
Never state a seasonal rate without the hours beside it, because candidates now compare hourly earnings and a rest day against town work and decide on that comparison.
Service runs on calling and answering: an order read out, acknowledged, timed and sent as one. A cook who works in silence breaks the section, so watch an applicant through a busy hour before deciding anything about their knife work.
Agencies recruit port agency assistants, tender-handling crew, embarkation staff, provisioning hands, shore excursion coordinators, guides, coach drivers, and quay supervisors.
Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes take the calls, and the work is embarkation and tender handling, provisioning, transfer and guiding, compressed into the hours a vessel is alongside.
Calls cluster, so the rota is built around arrival times rather than a standard day, and a candidate needs that explained before accepting, not afterwards.
Port call work is anticipatory: stores, crew changes, repairs, and inspections are arranged before a vessel arrives and recorded afterwards in one report. Test with a situation where two requirements collide, and watch how an applicant decides which gives way.
Lines take on ferry deckhands, able seamen, mooring gangs, gate staff, boarding and ticketing agents, port clerks, cargo hands and duty officers.
Piraeus serves both island groups, while Rafina and Lavrio serve the near Cyclades, and Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Syros, and Rhodes serve as transfer points between the two.A candidate’s travel time and travel cost differ enormously between a near Cycladic island and a far Dodecanese one, so say which island the post is on and how it is reached.
What kills people on a terminal is a vehicle meeting somebody on foot. The first hour teaches marked walking routes, eye contact before crossing, and never standing behind a machine, and enforces them afterwards without exception.
Yards recruit ship fitters, platers, welders, pipefitters, industrial painters and blasters, scaffolders, marine electricians, mechanical fitters and crane operators on Syros.
The yard builds, repairs, and upgrades for commercial and naval fleets in the eastern Mediterranean, one of the few remaining heavy industrial operations in an island group that once housed the country’s industry.
Work arrives as discrete dockings and projects, so hiring is project-shaped rather than seasonal, and the honest offer is a defined package with a defined end.
Commissioning happens on somebody else’s site, under their induction and work-control system, and the engagement ends when the plant performs, not at a weekend. Say how many nights away it carries before any offer.
Operations engage quarry and plant operators, drill-and-blast operatives, dumper and loader drivers, process plant operators, mineral processing technicians, mine mechanics, weighbridge clerks, and bulk-loading hands.
Bentonite, kaolinite, perlite, and pozzolana are worked and shipped from Milos, alongside sulphur, barite, and gypsum, and the island is a European-scale production centre for the first two.
This is plant and heavy equipment work rather than seasonal work; it is the one substantial year-round industrial employer outside Syros, and shift and residence terms should be written as permanent.
Competence transfers, and that is the honest pitch: plant operation, earthmoving, pumping, and heavy maintenance all move into civil works. Ask which machines and ground a candidate has worked on, then record it, because that record carries them forward.
Fleets take on marine engineers, charter base managers, yacht skippers, boat mechanics, marina berthing assistants, sailmakers and riggers, cleaning crews and tender drivers.
Charter and small-boat excursion work runs in both island groups, based at the marinas and transfer islands, and moves crew between islands within a single season.
Certification decides the shortlist here, and a berth on board is not accommodation, so state where crew sleep between charters and who pays for the inter-island travel.
Before advertising a guiding post, settle whether the work may be practised only under licence, and what a candidate trained abroad would need for recognition. Include the answer in the job description before the vacancy goes out.
Growers recruit olive pickers, graders and packers; shepherds and milking hands; irrigation operatives; tractor drivers; vine pruners; grape pickers; and cellar hands across the two groups.
Santorini grows on arid volcanic soil that resists phylloxera, with vines trained into the wreath-shaped kouloura; Naxos has better soils; and Kalymnos farms citrus and olives in the Vathys valley.
Hand work is unavoidable on terraced, volcanic ground, and the harvest falls within the hotel season, so a grower competes for staff with every property on the island.
Where pay follows the quantity picked, explain the tally before anyone starts: who counts, what a unit is, when a crate comes back rejected. Earnings move with the condition of the crop, and applicants should hear that plainly.
Contractors hire pool and garden maintenance hands, site supervisors, plumbers, electricians, painters and decorators, tilers, plasterers and bricklayers between the seasons.
Villa and hotel refurbishment, pool and garden maintenance and property management for absent owners carry the winter on every resort island in both groups.
This is the one reliable way to hold a worker on the island between seasons, and an employer who can offer it has a retention advantage.
Underground and deep excavation work is a different discipline: support to a design, gas monitoring, a controlled access point and a shift pattern that runs through the night. Medical and confined space training precede first entry.
Handlers work with aviation security officers, aircraft cleaners, ramp agents, check-in agents, baggage handlers, ground handling agents, boarding staff, and shift duty managers.
The region has many island airports, including Kalymnos, whose field at Argos opened to improve mainland connections, and flight schedules set the working year on each one.
When flights stop, work stops, so shift availability is the real requirement, and a contract length that depends on a published timetable should never be implied as a promise.
Dangerous goods move on a declaration, some signs, and the training behind it is specific to class and packaging, not general. A handling ticket does not cover it, so recruit or appoint for that competence deliberately.
The islands also recruit lifeguards, animation staff, and spa therapists for resort properties; excursion guides and car and scooter hire agents through the seaso,; transfer and coach drivers foairportrt rus,; and nurses and care assistants across the island health services at Ermoupoli, Rhodes city, and Kos town.
Three questions apply to every occupation, whether or not it appears above. Is it named in the AC?. Are positions still left against it? Can the employer evidence what the scheme requires of it? Nothing about an unusual occupation changes those three.
Write out the duties, and the code usually becomes obvious. Write a job advertisement, and it usually doesn't. The first describes tasks, hours, and responsibility; the second describes an employer’s hopes. Only one of the two can be classified reliably at all.
An estimate is not an assertion. It must be occupation-coded, Alignedto the body’s own field, and justified with data: employer numbers, how activity has moved over the previous two years, forecasts, and the labour supply already available in the market.
The list below is deliberately specific. Anyone considering a hire in Ermoupoli should be able to read it and know what will be done, by whom, in what order, and what will still be left on the employer’s desk at the end.
Nothing in this stage involves persuading anyone. It involves establishing facts: which category the post sits in, whether the ceiling has been reached, what the employer must evidence about its own income, and whether the offer duration meets the statutory floor for the route.
The completeness stage takes up most of the waiting and is the only part an employer can influence. It depends on lodging a file that needs nothing added. Everything in the sequencing we use targets that one outcome and nothing else.
Pay runs against a floor reset annually by joint ministerial decision after a prescribed consultation, so a rate that complied in one period may not comply in the next. We flag the reset, and the statutory payments that sit on top of monthly pay rather than inside it.
Positions can run out partway through a period, so a route open when an enquiry started can close by the time the file is ready. For that reason, we re-read the act before lodging and tell the employer rather than lodge into a ceiling already reached.
The employer applies first, and the worker cannot start the process. The employment approval is a precondition for the national visa; the visa is a precondition for entry; the permit application follows entry. Each stage depends on what the previous stage produced, which is why the order holds.
The authorities must decide a single permit within ninety days of a complete application. The EU Blue Card runs to the same ninety days, which falls to thirty days where the employer holds recognition under the Code. Both periods apply to the authority, not to a didate waiting for a date.
The employer’s own evidence is the most avoidable delay on this list. An income document that takes weeks to obtain, electronic credentials nobody at the company can find, a signature needing attestation: all of it is known at the start, and all of it is routinely left late.
We would rather be chosen on something that can be audited than on something that has to be taken on trust. Every item below is the first kind, and each has a counterpart practice whose absence would show in Ermoupoli's file.
An employer doing this alone usually starts from whichever page ranks highest and finds the error at the point of refusal. What it gets here instead is the reading done first, against the instrument in force, and the answer before the commitment rather than after it.
Working from the statute is slower, and the result is duller. It also means the figure on the page is the figure in force, which is the only property of a figure that matters to an employer about to sign a contract against it.
Not settled is a different answer from not possible, and the two get merged in advertising. An occupation outside the act is not possible this period. A qualification awaiting a competentbody’ss view is not yet settled. The first ends the conversation; the second reorders it.
Employers here communicate season length, and it varies more between islands than anywhere else in Greece. Rhodes and Kos run a March to early November envelope in a good year. Santorini and Mykonos run April or May to October, with resort islands closing around mid-November. On Anafi, Sikinos, Agathonisi, Leipsoi or Kasos, a five-month contract is the honest promise. A contract on Rhodes is two or three months longer than a contract on Mykonos, and a small island is shorter than both. The resident working-age pool here is holding rather than thinning, but the islands still take in a workforce each spring and release most of it each autumn. AtoZSerwisPlus does not run an office in Ermoupoli and says so plainly.
Put the post, pa,y and startdate you want for Ermoupoli in front of us.
Before acting on anything above, check the position against the official text that currently applies, because that text governs and this page does not. The research behind these pages found figures already overtaken by an amendment published on official sites, which is why figures appear sparingly, and sources are named. This is information of a general kind rather than advice, and no result is undertaken.
AtoZSerwisPlus gives employers in Ermoupoli the route, the evidence list and the statutory periods before anything is committed to a candidate.
Because the island that holds the administration is not the island that holds the work, regional business runs through Ermoupoli. At the same time, the rota is filled on Rhodes, Kos, Santorini, or Mykonos, roughly a day’s sailing away, so allow travel time for every deadline you set.
Size is not the test; capacity to pay is. A small business can use the route, but it must show income sufficient for each worker it recruits, which is where many small employers stop.
Yes, and the two should not be run together. The Immigration Code sets who may be admitted and on what approval; the Labour Code sets working time, rest, overtime premiums, and the pay floor a contract must meet.
The Code allows an act to provide for an increase to cover unforeseen and emergency needs in any sector. Whether a given act carries such a margin, and how large it is, has to be read from that act.
Not necessarily. Each act is set afresh based on the consultation and the data behind it, so an occupation that ran out can come back with more positions, fewer, or none, and no employer can claim a previous figure.
The occupation, as identified in the European standard classification, inside one of the employment categories. Positions attach to that unit and to nothing else: not to an employer, not to a vacancy, not to a place.
No local body allocates or releases positions. The useful approach runs the opposite way, through the sector body that files estimates for your field in the annual consultation, which is national and built on occupations.
No. A complete, well-prepared file and an empty occupation produce the same result as a weak one, because completeness and positions are separate conditions, and both must hold before an approval can issue.
Treat a thin figure as a reason to move first rather than a reason to wait. Positions go as applications are handled, and nothing holds one open while a vacancy is still being discussed internally.
The final quarter, opening when the labour ministry publishes its invitation to consult and closing when the consultation does. Work done before that is preparation, and work done afterwards misses the act entirely.
Stop looking for an advertisement requirement, a resident-labour search, a clearance certificate, and a shortage list to argue from. None of them exists here, and hunting for them delays the work that does matter.
There is no publication period and nothing to wait out. A business can move from deciding to recruit to lodging an approval application as fast as it can assemble the documents, which is unusual in Europe and worth using.
As a contributor to the number you will be measured against, not as a gatekeeper you have to satisfy. That reframing saves a business the effort of chasing a clearance that no provision requires.
Rhodes and Kos, where flight availability has pushed booking windows into early November and a March start is realistic in a good year. Santorini and Mykonos close earlier, and the small islands of either group run about five months.
It follows the uniform European format and records what the holder may do in the labour market. That statement on the card, and the decision behind it, is the employer’s evidence that the person may lawfully be employed.
A lawful contract running for at least six months, remuneration no lower than the statutory minimum for an unskilled employee or craftsman worker, and tax documents showing it can meet the promised wages.
Seasonal approvals run on their own conditions, and the seasonal contract must state the particulars set by that procedure rather than the invitation article. Do not carry the invitation minimum across to a seasonal file.
On validity, renewal length, and legal basis, where the published descriptions predate the amendments. The practical rule is to check anything time-bound against the Code before relying on it in a contract.
A holder of an equivalent card from another member state can apply for one here. It is a separate procedure with its own conditions, so check it rather than assuming the existing card travels.
It is based on gross annual salary, so the yearly figure is compared with the threshold. An employer thinking in monthly terms should convert before testing the offer against the ratio.
The first card runs for three years, and renewals run the same length; a short contract can shorten it, and a passport expiring sooner will shorten it too, so check both before the offer goes out.
The published period and nothing firmer than that. Giving a candidate a date invites a complaint when it slips, and the period belongs to the authority, not the employer or us.
The annual act decides, and its list governs, rather than any general idea of seasonality. An employer whose activity is seasonal in fact but absent from the act has no seasonal route open to it.
A capacity certificate from the agriculture ministry. It confirms the area under cultivation, or the livestock kept, against the number of workers being asked for, and the approval file is incomplete without it.
Not as a route of its own. Employers make the standard request, and whether a reserved position is drawn on is a matter for the act and the selecting authority, not the employer’s application.
We prepare and lodge the employer’s part, brief the worker on what the consular appointment requires, and help with the permit application once entry has happened. We cannot attend for anyone, and we promise no dates.
Employers treat ninety days as a service level and plan the rota against it. It is an outer limit on authority for a complete file, suspended whenever a document is requested, and the consular stage and entry sit entirely utside iit
Accommodation, a stated rest day, honest hours and a stated contract length, in that order. Rental stock keeps moving into short-term letting, so an employer who houses staff and says exactly what is provided beats one who pays more and does not.
We will not. Our role is to prepare the application, lodge it, follow it up, and correct whatever the authority raises. We have no office in the country, no influence on any decision, and nothing to do with when a worker starts.
It removes the need for a ground. Before it, the reason for the move matters and has to be one the rules recognise; after it, the worker may take different employment without justifying the move to anyone.
A late application is still possible, within three months after expiry, against a charge for each month of delay. The charge sits in the current instrument, and we do not quote it, because it is the kind of figure that moves.
The declaration is what the employer is held to, and the penalty for unsuitable accommodation attaches to it. Nothing in the published procedure describes a visit beforehand, so the practical position is that it is declared first and tested only if something goes wrong.
It means the question is open rather than settled, and an open question costs money. An employer that assumes a published standard exists will spend time looking for it; one that assumes anything will do finds out through the penalty.
Pay offered on the main dependent employment route is measured against the statutory minimum, so the wage decision applies to labour migration as well as domestic employment. When it moves, the floor under every offer moves with it.
Somebody’s addition, usually undated. It may even be right for one coverage package on the day it was written, but it is not a published rate, it cannot be cited to a payroll auditor, and it will not match the branch figures later.
No. A worker paid at or near the statutory floor is nowhere near the limit, so the whole of the pay carries contributions and the ceiling is irrelevant to costing that post. It is a consideration for senior and specialist appointments only.
Within limits. The average weekly maximum is 48 hours over a reference period of up to four months, including statutory overtime, so a heavy week must be balanced by lighter ones within that window.
Overtime, almost invariably. English-language guidance often uses only one word for everything above full-time, so an employer reading in English won't see the distinction until a payroll audit or a claim introduces it.
No. Overtime is for genuine additional need, held inside a daily limit and an annual ceiling, and a rota that assumes it permanently is really a rota for a larger establishment with the hours written down wrongly.
An employer planning a stretch of long days should treat the formal steps as part of the rota cost. Hours handled without them carry a far heavier premium, and that premium falls on the wage bill.
The right sits in the Labour Code rather than in the contract of employment, so the parties don't settle it when the contract is signed. It travels with the worker into the job.
At Ermoupoli, in the shipyard and town economy, in the Milos mining operations, on the ferries and in the ports, and in health, education, and administration in Rhodes city and Kos town. Everything on the resort strips closes with the season.
This rule bites when you have fewer workers than the pattern needs: once the rest period is reserved within every twenty-four hours, continuous cover takes more hands than the hours alone suggest.
Declarations run through the national labour information system, which records the start of an employment relationship, the personnel details behind it and, in covered sectors, the daily record of hours worked. The employer files them, not the worker.
Either the labour inspection authority or the decentralised administration imposes it, depending on which of them detects the breach. For the employer the practical consequence is the same, so there is nothing to be gained from guessing which will call.
Two different questions hide behind the word recognition: what the qualification is worth, and whether the holder may exercise the profession. The first has an academic answe,r and the second does no;d an employer should know which one it needs.
Three separate things can be in issue: what the qualification is, whether the professional qualification is recognised, and whether the profession may be exercised. They sit with different decision makers. Clearing one says nothing about the next.
The straight answer is thatwe can notestablish thisd. We could find no trace of a path from a medical qualification earned outside the Union to permission to practise here, and an employer should treat that silence as a risk.
The licence is one requirement among several for professional driving work, and the rest sit with the transport authorities rather than with the employer. Those additional requirements were not set out here, so they must be confirmed before the post is offered.
An advert is a commercial act here, not a procedural step, since no individual search for resident labour is required. That makes the wording a question of what the employer can stand behind rather than of compliance.
