3 Migrant Bodies Found at Poland’s Border With Belarus
In this regard, the spokeswoman for the Polish border guard, Anna Michalska, said that the fear that more bodies could be found in that area is increasing, so the police, the border guard, and the Polish army have involved in a wider search, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
According to InfoMigrants, two bodies were found on January 12 and 13, while on January 7, a Yemeni doctor named Dr. Ibrahim Dihiya from Grupa Granica was found at the same border.
“About the circumstances of the death of Dr. Ibrahim Dihiya from Yemen, about 285 people missing since the beginning of the humanitarian crisis, and about the unlawful operation of the services, we demand that Polish Border Guard face the consequences and take urgent action to prevent further casualties.” Grupa Granica said in a Twitter post.
In addition, it states that since the summer of 2021, when migrants began crossing the road from Belarus, around 285 people have been reported missing.
Thus, the NGO organization called on the Polish border guard to take urgent action during the weekend to prevent other victims.
Through a video statement on Twitter on Sunday, January 15, Maja Ostaszewska from the group Granica also called for “an end to deportations and [for] humane treatment of migrants at the Polish-Belarusian border.”
She also stressed that winter poses an additional threat to migrants trying to cross the border from Belarus to the EU.
As the Polish border guard explains, despite the fact that there is a 5.5-meter-long fence along most of the border between Poland and Belarus, Poland has recorded 530 attempts to cross the border since the beginning of 2023.
Moreover, Grupa Granica revealed that they received 121 calls for help from immigrants and provided assistance to 84 people. The same claims that since August 2021, 14 migrants have died on the Polish side of the border.
The Polish border guard also confirmed that there were fewer illegal entry attempts from Belarus last year, with 15,700 compared to 2021, when around 40,000 were registered.
Migrants are still making their way to Belarus, trying to cross into Poland, which is also hosting more than 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees since Russia’s nearly year-long occupation of Ukraine.
