Croatia Grants Record High Work Permits to Nepali Nationals
Croatia Issues Record Number of Work Permits to Nepali and Asian Workers Amid Growing Labor Demand
Croatia is experiencing a significant shift in its labor market, with a record number of work permits issued to Nepali citizens in the first quarter of 2025. More than one in five work permits granted by the Croatian government during this period were issued to Nepali nationals, signaling Nepal’s growing role as a leading source of foreign labor in the country. If the trend continues, Nepal could soon surpass Bosnia and Herzegovina as the top provider of foreign workers in Croatia.
Shifts in Regional Worker Trends
While Bosnian citizens still received the highest number of permits — 9,389 in Q1 2025 — there is a noticeable shift in the regional employment landscape:
- Serbian workers were granted approximately 5,945 permits, about 100 fewer than the same period last year.
- North Macedonian citizens saw an increase of 200 work permits issued compared to the previous period.
Surge in Asian Workforce in Croatia
In addition to Nepalese workers, Croatia is witnessing a sharp rise in foreign workers from Asia, notably:
- Filipino nationals received around 6,000 work permits, an increase of 1,800 compared to 2024.
- Indian citizens were issued 5,555 permits, marking a rise of 500 from the previous year.
- Egyptian workers saw the most dramatic growth, with permit numbers increasing by over 50%, reaching about 2,000 permits in total.
However, not all nationalities experienced growth. Bangladeshi workers saw a decline in work permits issued during this period.
Employment Growth in March 2025
Croatia’s workforce is expanding rapidly. In March 2025, the number of insured workers rose by 11,000, compared to a 4,000 increase in February, indicating a consistent upward trend. This data comes from the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute.
The total number of insured persons has now reached approximately 1.72 million, with the tourism and hospitality sectors accounting for the highest contributions.
Foreign Workers Boost Key Industries
Sectors employing the largest numbers of foreign workers include:
- Construction: 17,343 work permits
- Tourism and Hospitality: 15,870 work permits
- Trade: 2,779 work permits
The construction industry recorded the largest absolute growth in employment over the past year, reflecting Croatia’s continued infrastructure development and housing demand.
