EU Offers Over €1 Billion Financial Assistance to Tunisia in Efforts to Boost Economy and Halt Irregular Migration
According to the Voice of America News, Tunisia has become a gateway for migrants and asylum-seekers who are constantly looking to reach European countries in search of a better life as their home country deals with debts and is negotiating IMF bailout loan, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The €900 million package will be complemented with €150 million additional for immediate support, while the EU also vows to help Tunisia with border management and to combat human trafficking.
“We both have a vast interest in breaking the cynical business model of smugglers and traffickers. It is horrible to see how they deliberately risk human lives for profit,” EU Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said during a joint visit to Tunisia with the Italian and Dutch prime ministers.
She also noted that EU projects would help Tunisia export clean, renewable energy to the EU and deliver high-speed broadband in efforts to boost economic growth and job creation in the country.
Last year, the country reached an in-principle deal for an IMF bailout loan of nearly $2 billion, but talks have stalled over the demands by the fund, especially on enterprises run by the state and state subsidies on basic products.
According to Frontex, the EU border and coast guard agency, the total number of irregular border crossings from Tunisia has reached 2,051 in the first three months of 2023, with the main migratory routes being Central Mediterranean, as 98.5 per cent or 2,022 people irregularly crossed the border to this route, which includes countries like Algeria, Egypt and Libya from the African continent and Italy and Malta, from the European side.
In addition, 23 detections were recorded in the Western Balkan route and another four in the Eastern Mediterranean Route.
Italy is one of the main countries where Tunisians migrate to, while France used to be a popular one back in the 80’ies. The geographical proximity can be one of the reasons why Tunisians are often found in Italy.
As Tunisians head to Europe, the number of sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia has simultaneously increased. Between 2004 and 2014, the number of non-Tunisian nationals residing in Tunisia increased by 66 per cent – from some 35,000 to 53,490.
