EU Prioritizes Schengen Visa Facilitation for Turkish Nationals, Says Ambassador
The EU Ambassador to Türkiye, Thomas Ossowski, has reaffirmed that Schengen visa facilitation for Turkish nationals is a top priority, citing long waiting times and visa-related challenges.
Strengthening Cooperation for Visa Facilitation
Ambassador Ossowski stated that he has been in intensive contact with Schengen member states and has increased cooperation with Turkish officials to develop a new approach to visa facilitation.
Türkiye’s Progress on Visa Liberalization Criteria
- The EU proposed visa liberalization for Türkiye ten years ago.
- Türkiye has met 66 out of 72 required criteria, with six remaining for full visa liberalization.
- While negotiations have not yet commenced, the EU aims to streamline the visa process for Turkish applicants.
Concerns Over Visa Appointment Fraud
Ambassador Ossowski raised concerns about tourism agencies selling fake Schengen visa appointments at high prices. He stressed that these illegal practices are blocking appointment availability and causing delays for legitimate applicants.
70% of Turkish Applicants Granted Multiple-Entry Visas
The Ambassador explained that the Schengen visa system is step-by-step, often granting single-entry visas initially, followed by multiple-entry visas over time. Despite this, statistics show that:
- 70% of Turkish applicants receive multiple-entry visas each year.
- In 2023, Turkish nationals applied for the second-highest number of Schengen visas globally.
- 867,646 Schengen visas were issued to Turkish passport holders in 2023.
The EU remains committed to improving the visa process for Turkish nationals while continuing discussions on long-term visa liberalization.
