Germany Criticized for Deporting Pakistanis in the Middle of Catastrophic Climate Situation in Pakistan
Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change and extreme weather events. Since June, Pakistan has been suffering from massive rainfall, and a third of the country is now underwater, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
As a result of this situation, about 33 million people have been affected by floods in Pakistan, which were caused by extremely heavy monsoon rains. According to the United Nations, close to 1,300 people have died.
Due to this situation, refugee groups in Germany have condemned the deportation of Pakistani asylum seekers by the German authorities.
“Due to massive monsoon floods, Pakistan is in the midst of a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions. The United Nations is sending emergency aid to Pakistan, and Germany is deporting vulnerable people there. This misanthropic chutzpah is indescribable,” Samar Khan from Hum Hain Pakistan pointed out in this regard.
In a statement released yesterday, the Bavarian Refugee Council said that in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, several people from Pakistan have been in detention awaiting deportation in recent days. According to the Council, many of them come from Punjab province, where some regions are struggling massively with the consequences of the flood.
“This deportation flight also affects people who are eligible for the planned right of residence. Some federal states have enacted anticipatory regulations to avoid something like this. Others – like Bavaria – create facts and continue to deport happily,” Johanna Böhm from the Bavarian Refugee Council also noted.
NRW deportation reporter, Committee for Fundamental Rights and Democracy eV, Sebastian Rose found that as of 2021, Pakistan, with 513 people deported, was in 4th place nationwide for deportations from Germany.
Moreover, the Pakistani government has described the floods as a climate disaster of epic proportions. In addition, the government has shown that the United Nations is providing emergency aid worth several hundred million euros. In this regard, refugee organizations claim that Germany has a special responsibility, as an industrial nation, in the fight against global warming.
At the same time, experts have emphasized that extreme weather events such as storms, heavy rains, or droughts in Pakistan will become more frequent and more intense as a result of global warming.
Sebastian Rose also added that due to the current “disaster of the century” in Pakistan, a rethink on the deportation of Pakistanis is needed.
