Greece Registered Over 3.4 Million Tourists in Country’s Airports in June
Through a statement issued on Tuesday, August 2, the Minister of Tourism confirmed that despite the many global crises that Greece is facing now, the income from travel and tourist flows remains satisfactory, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The Minister has attributed all the achievements to the planning carried out by the Ministry of Tourism with the primary objective of extending the period of tourism season by opening it way earlier than usual.
“We agreed with the Prime Minister in the winter that we will try to lengthen the tourist season and bring in more high-income travellers. We are living in a global crisis, and I will continue to say it because some people think that what is happening this year is business. It is not like that at all. It is the product of very hard work, important strategy and cooperation with the private sector,” he pointed out in this regard.
Minister Kikilias also pointed out the development of tourism that is happening this year in the areas of Central and Western Macedonia and the replacement of Russians and Ukrainians with other Balkan travellers, as well as the great push that has been given to cruises with a 280 per cent increase in the port of Thessaloniki.
He expressed his satisfaction that the country is seeing such an achievement, emphasizing that the Acropolis is also visited by almost 16,000 tourists daily.
At the end of last month, the Greek authorities were expecting nearly one million tourists to the country’s airports in the first week of August. In this regard, the Minister also noted that incoming flights in July exceeded 950,000 per week.
Previously, the report provided by the Bank of Greece revealed that the increase in the number of international travellers arriving in Greece also led to an increase in travel receipts in May by a total of 536.4 per cent and by 547.9 per cent in the five months of the first of this year. The increase also means it exceeded the figures for the same period of 2021.
Moreover, as Kikilias explains, about 5.7 million travellers are expected to visit the capital of Greece by air in the second half of 2022. The country also expects a record number of passengers in September.
