Indian CEO’s 400-Page Schengen Visa Application Sparks Debate on Passport Privilege
Lengthy Schengen Visa Application by Indian CEO Sparks Debate on Passport Power and Visa Inequality
A recent case involving a 400-page Schengen visa application submitted by an Indian entrepreneur has triggered widespread debate online about the strength of the Indian passport and the burdens associated with visa applications for Indian nationals.
Citizens of countries that lack a visa liberalisation agreement with the Schengen Area must obtain a visa to enter any of the 29 member countries. Indian passport holders fall into this category and consistently rank among the top nationalities applying for Schengen visas annually.
Visa Application Process Called “Excessive” by Some
The extensive length of the application raised eyebrows across social media, with many users questioning the necessity of such large volumes of documents—particularly bank statements, which are often the most voluminous part of the submission. While some commenters shared similar stories, others dismissed the situation as an overreaction, citing their own experiences where multi-year Schengen visas were issued with applications of just 10 to 30 pages.
According to data from AtoZSerwisPlus, Indian nationals were the third-largest group of Schengen visa applicants in 2023, following Türkiye and China. That year, Indian applicants submitted 966,687 visa requests, primarily to Switzerland, France, and Germany.
How Strong Is the Indian Passport?
India currently holds the 132nd position in the global passport ranking out of 199, based on the VisaGuide Passport Index. The Indian passport allows visa-free entry to 31 countries, while e-Visas are available for 41 countries, and visa-on-arrival is granted in 25 countries. Additionally, three countries allow entry with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), and two permit entry without presenting a passport.
However, Indian citizens still need to secure a visa for entry into 124 countries, including all Schengen nations—highlighting the significant travel restrictions still in place for one of the world’s largest populations.
