Lithuania: Internal Border Controls Extended Until May 14
The Lithuanian authorities have decided to prolong the temporary internal border controls until May 14, which is an extra 20 days from the date the controls were set to expire, on April 27.
The decision has been taken by the Lithuanian Minister of Internal Affairs Rita TamašunienÄ—, and announced through a notice published by the official website of the ministry.
According to Minister TamašunienÄ—, Lithuania has decided to extend border controls to protect its people, just as the rest of the Schengen Member States are doing.
“We continue to control our borders, and we see that our neighbours are continuing the same actions to protect their people. As before, the movement of goods is not restricted, and our main task is to take care of people’s safety,” says the Minister of the Interior Rita TamašunienÄ—.
The prolonged border controls are in effect for the already existing border checks at the common land borders with Poland and Latvia, to ensure that foreigners are not allowed to enter the country during the quarantine period.
The previous measures, which banns from entry foreign citizens, but permits to transit Lithuania in a bid to reach their country of residence, remains in force.
“The entry of persons and / or their personal cars into the territory of Lithuania is allowed only through the Kalvarija-Budzisko road crossing points operating on the border with Poland and the SaloÄiai – GrenstalÄ— road crossing points operating on the border with Latvia,” a FAQ on the measures explains.
It, however, points out that diplomatic transport is allowed through all road crossings.
As per crew and crew members working in international commercial transport companies or engaged in international commercial transport in all modes of transport will continue to be able to pass through the following international road border checkpoints:
- on the border with Poland Kalvarija-Budzisko and Lazdijai-Aradninkai
