Lithuania Passengers Subject to Temporary Internal Border Controls From July 7
The temporary internal border controls are introduced in light of the upcoming NATO summit that is scheduled to take place on July 11 and 12 in Vilnius, and they will remain effective for seven days, until July 13, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
Due to July 11-12, internal border control is being restored for the seven days of the NATO summit in Vilnius. Inspections at the border checkpoints established by the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) will resume on July 7 at 8 am until July 13 at 8 am,” the statement of the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs reads.
Explaining the rules now that the internal border controls are effective, the Ministry said that everyone is required to present their personal travel documents and documents of their vehicle.
Citizens of the European Union crossing the Lithuania border during the time that the internal controls are in place can present their identity cards or passports. On the other hand, citizens of non-EU countries are required to present their valid passports and visas if subject to the visa requirements.
During this time, the Lithuanian authorities said that travellers are not expected to experience inconveniences. However, since all documents need to be thoroughly checked, it was stressed that everyone should be prepared for longer waiting times than usual.
In addition, the Ministry explained that from today until July 13, controls will be renewed for passengers on domestic flights between Schengen Area member countries.
Controls will also be renewed for ferries at border checkpoints in seaports and for those who will be crossing the Lithuanian border with Poland and Latvia.
“Depending on the situation and possible threats, inspections will be carried out in a selective manner based on risk analysis at any time of the day,” the Ministry added.
In order to help with the implementation of the internal border controls, Latvian and Polish border guards will also be assisting the Lithuanian authorities.
Moreover, the army of Lithuania, as well as border guards from Moldova and Estonia and additional Frontex forces, will be deployed to make sure that the borders are safe during the entire time that the summit takes place.
Every country that is part of the Schengen Area is permitted to reinstate the internal border controls when needed in order to prevent violations of internal security.
