Millennials and Gen Z Most Eager to Visit Italy This Year, American Express Reveals
As a result, tourism is now benefiting greatly from this age group across Europe, and the number of bookings made by them in Italy is greater than those made by travellers of older generations.
In spite of these findings, the survey also sheds light on the fact that Millennials are now less likely to plan a trip to Italy than before the pandemic, which has mainly been caused by the COVID-19 uncertainty, AtoZSerwisPlus.comreports.
The analysis also shows that Italian youth, especially Gen Z, in the last two years have shown more desire to travel and is also the only group to have increased travel spending within the country over the course of 2021.
For all age groups in Italy, the main local destinations for 2021 were Rome and Milan, while Palermo and Catania were the main cities of departure.
In addition, for both Millennials and Gen Z, the main international destinations have been France, Greece, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates.
As for spending and payment methods, the last five years have seen an increase in the percentage of new cards purchased by Millennials and Gen Z.
American Express has also claimed that this is no different from what we see globally because, in the Consumer sector, Millennials and Gen Z customers are boosting purchases, thus accounting for approximately 60 per cent of new customers who have purchased globally in 2021.
“Our commitment to attract and engage the younger segment of our cardholders through expanding our value proposition and digital skills and capabilities is fueling 50 per cent growth above pre-pandemic levels in our Millennials’ spending and Gen Z as seen in Q4. In Q1 2022, Hence, even the younger groups are helping to grow the group’s business,” American Express noted.
According to data from the World Bank Group, in 2019, the number of international arrivals to visit Italy was about 95,399,000. Meanwhile, these statistics also show that in 2020 this number decreased significantly to 38,419,000. Regarding the number of departures, the data reveals that in 2019 they resulted in 62,207,000, which compared to 2020 decreased by 21,448,000.
