Nearly 1 in 5 Foreign Workers in Croatia Aim for Long-Term Settlement
Survey: 19% of Foreign Workers Aim to Settle Permanently in Croatia, Majority Support Families Abroad
A recent survey has found that 19% of foreign workers in Croatia plan to stay in the country permanently. Conducted between December 2024 and January 2025, the survey involved 400 foreign nationals—mainly from the Philippines (38%), Nepal (26%), and India (20%)—who are employed primarily in transportation (22%), hospitality (19%), and construction (17%).
The findings show that:
- 90% of the respondents financially support their families in their home countries.
- 32% plan to stay in Croatia for more than five years.
- 23% intend to remain for six to ten years.
- 20% hope to stay until retirement.
- 55% are considering relocating their families to Croatia.
The survey, revealed during the “Migration, Labor Market and Integration: Croatia Tomorrow” conference by the Croatian Employers’ Association (HUP) and the Migration Research Institute, highlights the growing role of Asian and African workers in Croatia’s labor market.
HUP Vice President Sadmir Hošić emphasized that Croatia must continue strengthening its integration efforts, involving both employers and the broader society.
However, the country has also seen a 70% drop in foreign work permit applications in 2025 due to newly imposed restrictions. According to the Ministry of Interior, Croatia currently hosts about 136,000 foreign workers, and nearly 7,000 fewer applications have been filed compared to the same period last year.
