Number of Portuguese Nationals Moving to Luxembourg Decreased Last Year
The same source confirms that in spite of the decrease noted last year, Portugal continues to remain the leading country of origin for immigration in Luxembourg, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
“Despite the reduction, Portugal is the main country of origin of emigration in Luxembourg,” the statement confirms.
The same notes that for a period between 2000 and 2022, the number of Portugal nationals who emigrated to Luxembourg was minimal in 2000, with 2,193 entries recorded, while the most significant increase was registered in 2012, with 5,193 entries.
“With the drop in 2022, the loss of relative importance of Portuguese immigration in Luxembourg continues to increase: between 2003 and 2022, the number of Portuguese inflows into Luxembourg went from over 29 per cent of the total number of foreign migrants to 12 per cent,” the Emigration Observatory report notes.
A decline in the number of Portuguese citizens residing in Luxembourg has also been noted this year. The figures provided by the European Office for Statistics, Eurostat, revealed there were 92,100 Portuguese citizens residing in Luxembourg this year, marking a decrease of nearly 1,600 in comparison to last year’s figures.
Eurostat report revealed that there had been registered a surge in the number of Portuguese nationals living in Luxembourg every year for a period from 2001 until 2017 as it increased from 58,700 to 96,800 before declining every year until the most recent period.
Last year, the number of Portuguese nationals residing in Luxembourg surpassed 93,000, while in 2021, more than 94,00 citizens of Portugal headed to Luxembourg.
Luxembourg continues to remain among the favourite countries to live in for a large number of citizens.
Luxembourg’s Ministry of Justice figures previously revealed that a total of 10,499 people acquired Luxembourgish citizenship in 2022. The same source revealed that citizens from Brazil (2,275) and Portugal (1,227) benefited the most from Luxembourgish citizenship last year, followed by those from France (1,191), the United States (889), as well as Belgium (551).
A report provided in February by Virgule showed that of 10,499 who benefited from Luxembourgish citizenship, 40 per cent of them have obtained nationality by recovery, which means that they have national roots in this country.
