Poll Reveals 84% of French Citizens Support Full Visa Suspension for Algerians
A CSA poll has revealed that 84% of French citizens support a total suspension of Schengen visas for Algerian nationals amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria.
French politicians have also backed such measures. UDR President and Alpes-Maritimes deputy Eric Ciotti argued that all visas for Algerians should be suspended until all Obligations to Leave French Territory are enforced. Similarly, National Rally leader Jordan Bardella recently called for a "zero-visa" policy for Algerians.
Minimal Differences Across Gender & Age in Visa Suspension Support
The poll found little variation in opinions across gender and age groups. Among respondents, 84% of women and 83% of men supported the visa suspension. The highest support came from the 50-64 (87%) and 18-24 (86%) age groups, while the 25-34 age group showed slightly less support, with 22% opposing the suspension.
France Restricts Access for Algerian Officials
In response to escalating diplomatic tensions, France has already restricted entry and movement for certain Algerian officials. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced the measure, stating that these restrictions aim to protect national interests and public safety. However, he noted that the restrictions could be lifted if Algeria cooperates in the readmission of its nationals ordered to leave France.
Tensions between the two countries have worsened in recent months due to Algeria’s repeated refusals to take back its nationals facing deportation from France.
