Presidents of EU Parliament, Commission and Council Receive Final Report With Proposals to Reform EU
The report was handed to the three presidents by the Co-Chairs of the Conference Executive Board during the closing ceremony that took place on May 9 in Strasbourg, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
According to the official website of the EU, the report is centred around 49 proposals that include concrete objectives and over 320 measures for the EU institutions to follow up on under nine topics.
The topics are focused on climate change and the environment, social justice and jobs, values and rights, democracy, migration, education, youth, and culture, among others.
It has been explained that the proposals are based on recommendations made by citizens who met within the EU Citizens’ Panels and National Citizens’ Panel and contributed their ideas to the Multilingual Platform.
Commenting on the proposals, the President of the EU Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that European citizens, especially young people, are at the heart of the vision for the future of Europe.
“They have directly shaped the outcome of the Conference. We are at a defining moment of European integration, and no suggestion for change should be off-limits. We should not be afraid to unleash the power of Europe to change people’s lives for the better,” the statement of Metsola reads.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, also talked about the Conference and its conclusions. He said that the Council would have the opportunity to express itself in the coming weeks and thanked the previous presidencies for their commitment.
“We must continue this development and ensure that the Union lives up to the aspirations and expectations expressed by the citizens. Its conclusions constitute a very rich source of proposals, which each institution must examine within the framework of its competencies,” Macron emphasised.
President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, made remarks too. She said that Europe stands for democracy, peace, individuals, and economic freedom.
“The European Union has to continue to deliver on European citizens’ expectations. Today, their message has been received loud and clear. And now, it is time to deliver,” von der Leyen stated.
The three institutions will now examine how to follow up on these proposals. A feedback event that aims to update citizens is expected to take place in autumn 2022.
