Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Visitors Contributing to Littering to Be Fined up to €3,000
According to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife authorities, the new rules officially entered into force on January 17, 2023, and they will apply to beaches as well as in other parts of the city, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
In line with the new rules that Santa Cruz de Tenerife has introduced, smoking will be prohibited on beaches as well as in bathing areas. The decision to prohibit smoking in these two spaces has been taken in order to avoid cigarette butts’ presence in the sand and the potential contamination of the coast.
“Smoking is prohibited on beaches and bathing areas of the municipality, except in areas specially authorised and designated by the Council,” the Santa Cruz de Tenerife authorities stated.
In addition to the above-mentioned, the Mayor.eu has explained that the authorities have said now it will also be prohibited to leave behind any trash and they have stressed that the fine for visitors violating any of the regulations can reach €3000.
It has been further explained that different bars and restaurants that operate on the beach must provide a bin. In case they do not follow such a rule, they are subject to a fine. Moreover, apart from risking being fined for not providing bins where holidaymakers can throw their trash, beach businesses can also suffer penalties for using plastics for single-uses.
Another thing that visitors need to be careful of while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is also that they are not allowed to feed stray animals and pigeons, among others. The authorities decided not to permit visitors to do such a thing anymore as according to them such activity is contributing to the littering factor.
These are not all the rules that Santa Cruz de Tenerife has introduced for visitors. The city’s authorities have highlighted that visitors are also prohibited and at risk of being fined for scratching on any public area and public transport.
Fines for minor breaches will begin from around €750 and depending on the rules that a visitor or a resident has broken, the fine may reach €3000.
