Schengen States Call for Border Wall Funding
This renewed attempt for more funding comes as a group of countries, including Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Norway, issued a joint statement calling for the EU to finance physical infrastructure for EU bordering, including physical barriers such as walls, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The issue of bordering protection has been a topic of debate for some time with different parties discussing its effectiveness and ethics of physical barriers.
In 2021, twelve member states directed a letter to the European Commission, saying that physical barriers were an effective measure for better border protection for the EU, rather than the member states expecting the first influx of migrants from the lack of EU border protection.
“…agree that physical infrastructure as [sic] an effective means of protection supporting the activities of border services, especially in the situation of instrumentalisation of migration. Therefore we encourage the EU to look for a solution to finance physical infrastructure (including physical barriers) from EU Funds,” the letter reads.
Following this situation, this February the European Council released recommendations that called on the European Commission to finance measures that member states propose and directly contribute to the control of EU borders.
On the other hand, critics have pointed out that border walls serving as a barrier for the protection of EU borders, isn’t a new practice within the EU, but rather is becoming very common.
Over the past eight years, member states have constructed more than 1,700 kilometres of walls to halt irregular border crossings from migrants and refugees. These barriers, however, have been met with mixed reactions, as concerns arise regarding their potential impact on human rights and the underlying causes of migration.
A 2019 report by the Transnational Institute revealed the European Commission’s willingness to finance border protection measures, such as surveillance, sensors, vehicles and buildings, and not physical walls alone.
The latest demand from these eight member states highlights their belief that physical infrastructure, including physical barriers, should be financed with EU Funds. It remains to be seen how the European Commission will respond to this renewed call for funding and whether it will reconsider its stance on supporting the construction of border walls.
The majority of these countries already have some physical barriers in place, such as Lithuania having a wall bordering neighbouring countries, Finland and Poland.
