Spain remains a top Schengen destination, receiving 1.6 million visa applications in 2024 alone—confirming its status as one of the most sought-after countries for travelers needing a Schengen visa.
Top Nationalities Applying for Spanish Visas
Out of the total applications, over 51% came from just five countries:
- China – 254,571 applications
(15.57% of Spain's total visa applications and 14.3% of all Schengen applications by Chinese citizens) - Morocco – 216,985 applications
(15.57% of Spain’s total and 35.76% of Moroccan Schengen applications) - Russia – 125,551 applications
(7.68% of Spain’s total and 20.7% of all Russian Schengen applications) - Algeria – 123,991 applications
(7.58% of Spain’s total and 22.77% of Algerian applications) - United Kingdom (non-citizen residents) – 123,058 applications
(7.53% of Spain’s total and 26.15% of all UK-based foreign nationals applying for Schengen visas)
Note: While UK passport holders do not need a visa for short stays, residents holding non-Schengen nationality do.
Spain Was the Top Destination for These Nationalities
Spain was also the first-choice destination for several other nationalities who submitted most of their Schengen visa applications to Spanish consulates:
- Ecuadorians – 76,692 out of 103,785 total applications (73.9%)
- Dominicans – 29,578 out of 51,229 applications (57.74%)
- Cubans – 28,261 out of 48,625 applications (58.12%)
- Bolivians – 18,124 out of 20,270 applications (89.41%)
- Mauritanians – 17,740 out of 23,596 applications (75.18%)
Special mention: Nigerien nationals and residents of Andorra submitted 100% of their Schengen applications to Spain.
