Tourism Remains a Top Job Generator in Spain for Another Month With 331,500 More Workers Than in 2021
According to Turespana, the Spanish Tourism Institute, employment in the country surpassed 2.6 million workers in June, marking the second-highest level in the country’s history, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
As per affiliates linked to tourism activities, 2.6 million of those were recorded in June alone, representing a year-on-year increase of 14.5 per cent and the creation of 331,555 new jobs.
“The rate of job creation in tourist activities in the first half of the year has been historic with an average of 53,000 new jobs per month, which indicates that the vaccination process, together with the ERTES mechanism, and the social shield approved by the Government to protect employment and companies during the worst moments of the pandemic, is proving to be an effective tool for the recovery of the tourism sector,” Reyes Maroto from the Tourism Ministry said.
Furthermore, the employment rates have surged across all branches of tourism, with the hotel industry gaining 238,422 workers – 62.9 per cent or 149,995 of those being engaged in food and beverage services and the remaining 88,427 in accommodation services.
In addition, other tourists’ activities experienced an increase of 87,649 workers while in travel agencies there were 5,484 more workers than in the previous years.
The hotel industry, altogether with travel agencies and tour operators, represented 69.7 per cent of the total number of registered workers to the Social Security in tourism, with the number of workers increasing by 15.4 per cent in the annual rate. This increase has been attributed to the increase in wage earners (19.4 per cent), who account for 81 per cent of the total in the sector, and the 0.8 per cent of workers being self-employed.
As per autonomous communities, the best results recorded were in Andalusia, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Island, the Community of Madrid, and the Canary Islands. The year-on-year increase recorded in the Balearic Islands (31.7 per cent) and the Canary Islands (20.3 per cent) is noticed.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain revealed that the number of international arrivals reached about 85.5 per cent of the levels of 2019 in June alone. In addition, the number of international passengers surged by three times compared to the arrivals recorded at the same time last year.
