Two Foreign Nationals Detained at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport Under European Arrest Warrants
According to the RDC report, the first one is a citizen of Romania wanted by the Portuguese justice system for offences against public order, while the second person is a Croatian national suspected of a large number of crimes, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The spokeswoman for the commandant of the Nadwi?la?ski Border Guard Unit, Dagmara Bielec, confirmed that the first action took place on Friday at Chopin Airport.
“During the identification and subsequent border checks, it was established that the data of a 33-year-old Romanian citizen are in the systems as a person wanted by the European Arrest Warrant issued by the Portuguese authorities for crimes against public order. At the time of the arrest, the woman was in transit deportation from New York via Warsaw to Bucharest,” Bielec explained.
Soon after the arrest, the 33-year-old was sent to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, and then by a court decision, the person was placed in one of the capital’s destination centres.
At the same time, it has been confirmed that another person detained by the Border Guard officers at Chopin airport was a 28-year-old Croatian.
“After arriving from Bergamo, the man was checked in and then detained – his data appeared in the SIS database as a person wanted under the European Arrest Warrant issued by the Finnish justice system for arrest and transfer or extradition,” Bielec noted.
The RDC report shows that the man arrested on Sunday was suspected of several fraud cases.
The spokeswoman said that the foreigner will be transported to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw for further activities related to his participation.
Warsaw’s Chopin Airport welcomes a large number of foreigners every year. In addition, the figures of the airport published earlier this year revealed that it welcomed a total of 6.5 million passengers since the beginning of this year.
The same source revealed that last month alone, the airport registered a remarkable number of foreign visitors with a total of million people using this airport.
The European arrest warrant is a simplified cross-border judicial surrender procedure in order to prosecute or execute a custodial sentence or even a detention order and it has been introduced on January 1, 2004, in all European Union Member States. The EAW replaced the extradition procedures that used to exist in EU countries.
