UK Ministers Consider Idea for Migrants to Be Held for Over 96 Hours
According to authorities in Britain, such new changes would help to prevent a further surge in the number of migrants, AtoZSerwisPlus.comreports.
A recent report provided by the Mirror notes that, at present, migrants are urged to stay at the Manston asylum centre, for a period of 24 hours before being required to go to detention centres or other accommodation centres.
“Staff across the Home Office have worked tirelessly under challenging circumstances to source alternative accommodation as quickly as possible for those who have been processed at Manston,” a Home Office spokesperson pointed out in this regard, according to the report provided by Mirror.
In this regard, a representative of the government of the UK said that the current crisis in the English Channel is leading to an unprecedented strain on Britain’s asylum system while adding that migrants who reach the UK territory in an unlawful way will not be allowed to start a new life in Britain.
The figures provided by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, also brought into light the fact that the number of migrants crossing the Channel illegally marked a notable increase.
The same source showed that in the first nine months of this year, the number of migrants who crossed the Channel illegally was 52,700, which means that there was marked an increase compared to the figures of the same period last year, during which period 52,000 cases were registered.
Recently it was reported that French authorities rescued 61 migrants, among them children, from the English Channel.
At the same time, the figures provided by the government of the United Kingdom in October this year revealed that the number of migrants who reached Britain in an unlawful way by crossing the English Channel in the past four years exceeded 75,000.
Authorities in France, as well as those in the UK, have continuously attempted to find an effective solution to this problem; however, the figures for illegal crossings remain high.
The same source revealed that since 2018, 75,628 people have crossed the English Channel.
The data provided by the Ministry of Defence shows that from January 2018 until June 2022, over 51,800 migrants entered the UK territory.
