UK Tourists May Soon Regain Access to EU Passport E-Gates, Says British Government
British travelers visiting the EU could soon benefit from using fast-track EU passport gates, potentially reducing long queues at border controls. The UK government confirmed ongoing talks with Brussels on allowing British passport holders to once again access the e-gates typically reserved for EU/EEA citizens.
If an agreement is finalized, UK nationals will no longer need to wait at manned desks for manual passport checks and stamping. Instead, they’ll be able to use automated gates, significantly reducing border wait times and making EU holidays more attractive.
The UK’s EU Relations Minister, Nick Thomas-Symonds, who is leading the negotiations, emphasized the practical benefits of such an arrangement. Speaking to media, he said the proposal would give British tourists and business travelers more time to enjoy their trips rather than stand in lines. He also noted the potential economic benefits, stating it would be “good for jobs, bills, and borders.”

Current Situation: UK Nationals Treated as ‘Third-Country’ Travelers
Since Brexit, UK passport holders have been categorized as visa-exempt third-country nationals. While they do not require a visa to enter the EU, they must queue in the “other nations” lane at border control, where their passports are manually checked and stamped.
This process often results in lengthy delays, especially during peak travel seasons. Some EU airports have introduced e-gates for third-country nationals, but UK travelers cannot yet use them until a formal agreement is reached.
UK Also Seeks Return to EU Pet Passport Scheme
Alongside border talks, the UK government is also pursuing reentry into the EU pet passport scheme, aiming to simplify pet travel between the UK and EU countries. Since leaving the scheme in 2021, UK pet owners must meet additional criteria and pay fees to travel with cats, dogs, or ferrets.
Rejoining the scheme would streamline travel for thousands of pet-owning tourists and reduce administrative barriers.
