

4 Million Foreign Tourists Spent Over €5 Billion In Spain March 2022
In a statement issued on May 5, the government also stated that total spending in March marked over €5 billion or 84 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
According to the Fontur and Egatur survey published yesterday, May 5, by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Spain welcomed four billion international tourists in the same month, which is 71 per cent of those who arrived three years ago.
“The United Kingdom was the main source market in March with nearly 826,399 tourists (18.3 per cent of the total) and in terms of spending volume with €1,013 million (20.0 per cent of the total),” the statement reads.
In addition, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism Reyes Maroto said that Spain is closing the first quarter of 2022 with good figures for international tourist arrivals and tourism expenditures, a trend which is expected to intensify in the summer period.
“The excellent employment figures that we have seen in April, and specifically in the hotel and catering sector due to the extraordinary Easter Week, together with the recovery of pre-pandemic levels in scheduled air capacity on international flights, which exceeds 29 million seats for the April-June quarter, are results that make us optimistic,” she pointed out in this regard.
The number of tourists visiting Spain in the first three months of 2022 increased by 696.7 per cent, thus reaching almost 9.7 million. Meanwhile, in the same period of 2021, 1.2 million tourists arrived.
Besides, during the first three months of 2022, international expenditures increased by 794.5 per cent compared to the same period of 2021, reaching €11,853 million.
Meanwhile, regarding the visitor’s place of residence, the annual growth was more pronounced in Ireland with 2593.7 per cent, the United States with 1,976.5 per cent, and the Nordic countries with 1,292.8 per cent.
Among the autonomous regions which had the largest share in tourist expenditures in March are the following:
- Canary Islands (with 33.1 per cent of the total)
- Catalonia (14.8 per cent)
- Community of Madrid (14.5 per cent)
In addition, the main tourist destination in March was the Canary Islands, with 27.9 per cent of the total, which turned out to be about 1.1 million tourists. Catalonia ranks second after the Canary Islands with 703,849 tourists or 17.5 per cent and Andalusia with 609,437 tourists or 15.1 per cent.
Moreover, about 101.8 per cent more tourists had arrived in the Canary Islands than in March 2021. The UK is also ranked as the main tourist source by this community with 35.1 per cent of the total and Germany at the same time with 18.2 per cent.
