Czech Republic’s Population Marks a Significant Increase This Year Due to Migration
The latest data published by the Czech Statistical Office (CSO) on June 13 show that this increase was created by a positive balance of foreign migration, including 10,800, as the natural currency of the population fell to 7,600, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
In addition, this figure does not include those 250,000 people who have been granted temporary protection in connection with the war in Ukraine.
“9,300 Ukrainians immigrated to the Czech Republic in the first quarter, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, and 2,400 left the country. In addition to the Ukrainians, the citizens of Slovakia and Russia once again contributed to the increase in the population of the Czech Republic,” statistics said.
Meanwhile, about 20,000 people emigrated to the Czech Republic during the first three months of this year, without counting Ukrainian war refugees. On the contrary, nearly 8,000 left the country in the same period, resulting in a positive net migration balance of over 10,000 people and contributing to the overall demographic growth.
Such data also show that in the first three months of this year, 24,200 children were born, while nearly 31,900 people died. Meanwhile, compared to the first quarter of 2021, in 2022, there were significantly fewer deaths, respectively, by 15,000 or 32 per cent. Nevertheless, compared to the 2015-2019 average, their number remained slightly over 3.5 per cent above average, and the current death toll is the strongest post-war 1946.
The Czech population experienced a decline of over 6,000 in the first quarter of 2021 due to the high mortality associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and limited migration flows. Most of the emigrants who came to the Czech Republic were Ukrainians, Slovaks and Russians.
The Czech Republic had a similar population growth in 2019, which increased by 44,100, thus reaching 10.6 million inhabitants at the end of the year. However, this was also the highest demographic growth since 2008.
In 2019, more than 65,000 foreigners emigrated to the Czech Republic from abroad, which is 7,400 more compared to the previous year, while 21,000 people emigrated abroad.
