EU to Increase Schengen Visa Fees by 12% From June 11
According to a statement of the Ministry, as of June 11, visa fees for adults filing a short-term visa application for Slovenia will be €90, instead of €80 as it has been so far, and €45, instead of €40, for children between six and 12 years old, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
Furthermore, nationals of countries who have not cooperated on readmission of their nationals irregularly staying in the EU will be paying a visa fee of €135 or €180, depending on Council’s decision.
The European Union’s Commission has not made any announcements yet regarding the date of the increase, but is expected to publish the change on its Official Journal by the end of this week.
The decision comes at a time when the EU has revealed the number of visas issued in 2023 has increased by 36.3 per cent compared to 2022, though the same remains down by 39 per cent compared to 2019, when the Schengen states had received 16 million applications.
Schengen Visa Fee Increase Justified With Inflation Rates & Salaries in Member States
The EU has published its draft proposal for the increase of Schengen visa fees on February 2, 2024, asking the public for feedback.
According to the Commission, the EU Visa Code grants the right to EU institutions to review visa-fees every three years, what has happened at the end of December 2023, after the fees previously increased from €60 to €80 in February 2020.
The Commission claims that the proposal for the increase has been drafted based on calculations on the inflation rates in the bloc, and the salaries of civil servants in the Member States.
EU Applicants & Organisations Unhappy With the Increased Schengen Visa Costs
Between February 2 and March 1, the EU made the draft law on visa fee increase available for public feedback. Most of the feedback during this period came from Turkish citizens, who expressed their dissatisfaction not only with visa fees, but also procedures.
One of the commentators of the draft, Turkish citizen Erhan Kaplan has suggested that the EU should enhance the reliability and quality of the visa services offered before implementing such a measure.
Whereas another citizen from Türkiye, who has remained anonymous, noted that the increase in visa fees is not just a matter of €10, as the same also represents a significant financial burden for many Turkish citizens who wish to travel to the Schengen Area for business, education, or tourism.
Further, the same has asked the EU to reconsider the fee increase for countries like Türkiye, and instead establish a more accessible fee structure.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has also provided feedback on the fee increase, pointing out that higher visa fees may deter potential visitors, as a result of which travel volumes would shrink.
Italian Ocean Sea Foundation has expressed concerns on the increase of Schengen visa fees too, calling instead, on the authorities to make the visas cost-free in certain cases, in order to facilitate cultural and trade exchanges, but would also encourage greater integration and understanding between citizens of different countries.
