Georgia Was Treated Unfairly by Not Being Granted EU Candidate Status Hungarian FM Says
Following talks with his Georgian counterparts, Minister Szijjártó said that Georgia has made significant progress in meeting the requirements to become a candidate for EU membership.
The same stressed that Hungary does not see any barriers for Georgia to receiving the status in the upcoming autumn season, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
This is not the first time that Minister Szijjártó shared such remarks on Georgia’s EU candidate status.
About Hungary explains that last week, during the talks that the EU has on the integration of Western Balkans, Minister Szijjártó noted that Georgia is “waiting to be allowed in” and at the same time stressed that “Georgia is not in any worse shape” than Ukraine and Moldova.
In addition to the above-mentioned, Minister Szijjártó further stressed that has been consistently providing assistance to Georgia in fulfilling the requirements set by the EU and highlighted that the EU Commission and the Member States do not use double standards in the case of Georgia.
Georgia applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, and in June of the same year, the Council of the EU discussed its application as well as stated its readiness to grant Georgia this status, provided that the country fulfilled all the requirements set by the Commission.
“On 23 June 2022, the European Council discussed Georgia’s EU membership application. The European Council stated that it was ready to grant the status of candidate country to Georgia once the priorities specified in the Commission’s opinion on Georgia’s membership application have been addressed,” the Council explained.
The Council of the EU adopts conclusions on the enlargement every year, and they also take into account the improvements that the candidate countries have made. In December of 2022, Georgia was referred to for the first time in the conclusions by the Council.
Back then, the Council acknowledged all the important steps that the country has taken in its reform process and at the same time, it encouraged the country to address the possibilities that have been specified in the opinion of the Commission on Georgia’s membership in order to be granted candidate status.
The Council also highlighted the need o deepen the sectoral cooperation with Georgia on the basis of the enhanced implementation of the Georgia-EU free trade area.
