Germany Expected to Receive 1.2 Million Migrants By the End of 2022
More specifically, 890,000 migrants reached Germany in 2015, with most of those being Syrian nationals fleeing the war in their home country, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
This year, the majority or approximately one million migrants came from Ukraine, fleeing the Russian war in this country and another 200,000 asylum seekers are expected to reach the country by the end of the year.
As Welt am Sonntag reports, 181,612 asylum applications were recorded by the end of October, with the majority of those coming from Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.
Despite the German hospitality offered to Ukrainians, many municipalities reported having reached their limit on handling such a large number of arrivals.
“We are approaching 200,000 asylum seekers this year. In the last legislature, this number was defined as the upper limit,” Armin Schuster, the German Interior Minister for Saxony said previously.
As almost all regions in Germany are reported to have reached their upper limit of processing requests for asylum and sheltering incoming migrants, the government was reportedly supporting its regions with €3.5 billion this year, with another €2.75 billion allocated for 2023, and has provided more than 67,000 accommodation spots.
On the other hand, the German MEP Manfred Weber recently said that a new migration crisis awaits Germany during the winter months, as an increase in migrant and refugee arrivals is expected.
Moreover, some analysts have noted that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians could leave their home country in the upcoming months, as Russian forces are continuing to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, potentially causing power cuts ahead of the winter season.
The EU refugee agency has confirmed that the number of asylum seekers in the bloc has already surpassed 2015 levels.
As EUAA reveals, the number of applications filed for asylum during September in the EU has reached 98,000, with these numbers likely to increase even further as a large number of persons are reaching the bloc due to the Russian military attack on Ukraine.
The authority also reveals that applications submitted in September peaked for citizens of India (4,600), Bangladesh (3,800), Tunisia (3,100), Georgia (2 600), Morocco (2,200) and Egypt (1,500). In addition, application rates filed by minors surged by another five per cent in September, reaching a record high of 5,300, witnessed for the first time since 2005.
