Germany Planning to Take in Migrants From Italy
It is believed that the German authorities decided to take migrants in order to reduce the pressure on EU member states that keep registering high numbers of migrant arrivals, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The news of such plans was announced by a spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Interior. The spokesperson said that Germany is planning to start redistributions of migrants from Italy this month.
Additionally, the spokesperson noted that the necessary talks on site are still ongoing, suggesting that further information will be revealed as soon as a decision is made.
According to Info Migrants, this would be the first admission under the new EU solidarity mechanism. In June 2021, EU countries agreed on a mechanism to relieve border countries receiving high numbers of migrants.
Thirteen countries have already agreed to take in migrants from southern countries. These countries said that they are ready to resettle migrants. More than 8,000 relocations have been agreed on, and the EU member states who cannot take migrants in have said that they are ready to provide financial assistance for countries that take in migrants.
Commenting on the mechanism, the European Union Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, said that the plan is to try out a voluntary solidarity mechanism and then take additional measures based on the situation.
“The idea is to try out the voluntary solidarity mechanism and then take stock of the situation based on the results in order to reform EU immigration regulations,” Johnasson stated.
Info Migrants explains that the number of migrants reaching Italy keeps on increasing each day. Thus, the country has been asking for help from the EU countries for years now, and this call is now finally being answered.
The same source noted that apart from Italy, four other Mediterranean countries – Greece, Cyprus, Malta, and Spain – have also called for a more evenly distributed reception of migrants.
Previously, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reported that more than 114,700 migrants entered the EU illegally in the first half of 2022. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) said that the number of irregular entries in the EU increased significantly in the first six months of 2022.
Additionally, the same explained that the most significant increase was registered on the Western Balkan route. The number of illegal entries on this route increased almost three times more compared to the same period in 2021.
In June 2022 alone, Frontex recorded almost 24,000 irregular crossings in the bloc, representing an increase of 59 per cent compared to June 2021.
