Hungarian MFA Urges EU to Fast-Track Georgia’s Candidacy
He estimated that Georgia was in no worse condition than Ukraine or Moldova, stressing that this is why it also deserves candidate status for membership, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
Through a statement, his ministry argued the importance of accelerating the bloc’s enlargement after it would provide new impetus and bring positive energy to the EU.
He vowed that Budapest would support Georgia to move forward as quickly as possible during the accession negotiations.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also expressed his support regarding Georgia’s membership in the EU, which, according to him, is also in the interest of Europe.
He said that connecting the EU with the Caucasian regions is in the interest of Europe while linking up with Georgia is the easiest way in that.
Orban’s comments came during a joint Hungarian-Georgian cabinet meeting held in Telavi. According to him, the EU’s competitiveness had been saved through central European countries’ accession, which was proof that if Europe rejects people willing to work and develop, it will pay by losing its competitiveness.
Orban said that his country was sad and even angry when seeing that Georgia’s candidate member status was rejected, whereas other countries far behind Georgia in terms of development had been granted that status.
In June this year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, also shared the same opinion as PM Orban, noting that Georgia has been treated unfairly by the EU by not being granted the EU candidate status alongside Ukraine and Moldova.
Georgia applied for candidate status together with Ukraine and Moldova in March 2022. The EU granted candidate status to both these countries in June 2022 but not to Moldova.
In February this year, the European Commission published analytical reports on these three countries’ alignment with the EU acquis.
The European Council is due to review the country’s progress in its reform programme in October and also consider the next steps in the accession process of Georgia.
However, the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, last month warned that Tbilisi needed to implement sweeping reforms in order to get candidate status.
According to him, candidate status needs to be earned through reforms and adherence to the EU values, highlighting that in Georgia, there is still quite a bit of work to be done in this regard.
