Hungary Fined €40,000 by EU Court of Human Rights Over Death of Syrian Refugee
The incident happened back in 2016 while he attempted to cross from Serbia to Hungary by boat on the Tisza River, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reported.
In this regard, the plaintiff, Abdullah Mohamed Alhowais, has stressed that the Hungarian border guards tried to push him and another refugee back into Serbia by using several forms of violence at the river border.
Besides, officials at the border have continuously used tear as well as gas and also threw stones at the refugee group while also releasing police dogs on them, according to him.
However, such accusations have been denied by authorities in Hungary.
According to a report provided by Info Migrants in this regard, the group of migrants was in breach of the law by helping all the smugglers to reach the border; however, the plaintiff considered that a violation of the right to life had happened.
At the same time, the court also agreed with Alhowais that authorities in Hungary were not properly investigating the case.
The report provided by the ECHR also noted that the European Convention on Human Rights, which also establishes the right to life with the wording that everyone’s right to life should be protected by law, which also includes the banning of inhuman or degrading treatment, and this law has also been breached.
Such a ruling also constitutes a partial agreement after not all charges brought against authorities in Hungary were included in this ruling.
At present, the government of Hungary is obliged to pay Alhowais a total of €34,000 in damages and 5,600 in legal fees.
Authorities in Hungary are continuously dealing with a large number of migrants while attempting to find an effective solution to this problem.
The figures provided previously by Prime Minister’s chief adviser on internal security, György Bakondi previously, revealed that the number of illegal border crossings last year nearly doubled in 2022 compared to the figures for 2021.
In addition, he considered it very difficult; according to him, immigrants are reaching the borders of Hungary from different countries.
Based on a previous report provided by Hungary Today, nearly 265,000 people attempted to cross the southern border of the country in an unlawful way, compared to 114,000 recorded during the same period last year.
Bankondi also added that migrants are now trying to reach Hungary also from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India while emphasising the fact that the presence of Indians has caused the most significant concerns.
