Government Response to Public Outcry
In response to widespread complaints, Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Minister Nasser Bourita, is working with EU diplomatic missions to address the issue. While specific measures have not yet been disclosed, the government's involvement aims to curb this exploitative practice and provide a fairer process for Moroccans seeking Schengen visas.
French Visa Applications Require Video Call Verification
To combat visa appointment fraud, the French consulate in Rabat implemented a new verification system on September 18, 2024. The outsourcing agency TLScontact now requires first-time French Schengen visa applicants to complete a video call during the appointment booking process. During the call, applicants must present their passports on camera, enabling employees to verify their identity and prevent intermediaries from exploiting the system.
Challenges Persist for Other Schengen States
While Morocco is addressing fraud in the French visa application process, applicants continue to face similar difficulties with other Schengen member states. Moroccan Ambassador to France, Samira Sitail, has called for a more equitable and credible visa system across the Schengen Zone to ensure fair access for all applicants.
