The latest data provided by the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has revealed that the Central Mediterranean region contributed to half of the detections at the EU’s external borders this year, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
However, it points out that there has been a significant drop of 33 per cent in crossings within this area since last month, with the Western Balkans emerging as the most active migration route in September.
According to these data, the Central Mediterranean continues to be the main route to the EU in 2023, with national authorities reporting over 131,600 detections in the first three quarters, marking the highest figure for this route during this period since 2016.
Unfortunately, sea crossings in this area remain extremely dangerous, Frontex said. Based on International Organization from Migrants (IOM) data, over 2,384 individuals have gone missing in the Mediterranean so far this year, with most of these incidents occurring along the Central Mediterranean route.
External Frontex figures also show that between January and September, the Western Balkans route, the second most active route with over 81,800 detections, saw a 23 per cent drop, mainly due to stricter visa policies.
The same source noted that irregular crossings across the English Channel to Great Britain fell by 12 per cent in the first nine months, reaching over 46,500.
Previously, Frontex revealed that in the first seven months of 2023, a total of 176,100 people attempted to enter EU countries by illegally crossing the bloc’s external borders. The authority’s report also highlights a 13 per cent increase in the first seven months of this year compared to 2022 figures.
Meanwhile, during the first five months of this year, 102,000 individuals tried to reach EU countries by irregularly crossing the bloc’s external borders. As the Frontex explains, this represents an increase of 12 per cent compared to the statistics for the same period of the previous year.
Moreover, between January and May 2023, national authorities in the Central Mediterranean route reported over 50,300 detections, making up nearly half of this year’s irregular entries into the bloc.
