One in Ten People Living in France in 2021 Are Immigrants, Statistics Show
The same source said that almost seven million people or 10.3 per cent of those who lived in France during this period, were immigrants compared to 6.4 per cent of French residents who came from abroad in 1968, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
According to InfoMigrants, a news and information site for migrants, in 2021, more than a third of immigrants in France had obtained French citizenship.
Based on this study, immigrants, together with their descendants, were mainly mixed in society, where a large part of them had children born in France. As for the third generation, nine out of ten had only one or two grandparents who had immigrated to France.
In this regard, the head of the demographic and social studies unit at INSEE, Sylvie Le Minez, pointed out that migration had contributed to the diverse composition of France. At the same time, she said that one-third of the country’s population is connected to emigration for three generations.
Half a century ago, immigrants to France came mainly from Europe, while in 2021, they came from countries such as North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
INSEE data also show that about 12 per cent of immigrants that year were born in Algeria, another same percentage of immigrants were born in Morocco, and four per cent in Tunisia.
Among the countries that have received the most immigrants during 2021 are the following:
- Portugal – eight per cent
- Italy – four per cent
- Turkey – three per cent
- Spain – three per cent
Further data of INSEE reveals that slightly more than half of all immigrants in France in 2021 were women.
Most immigrants lived in large cities including the capital, Paris, where up to a fifth of the population came from abroad.
Moreover, Le Minez also emphasised that despite the recent increase in immigration in France, it remained effectively within the European average, behind Germany and Spain.
In addition, since 2010 the number of people living in French territory born abroad has increased steadily. That year, the number of people born outside France was approximately 7.3 million. In 2015, the refugee crisis had no effect on the shift in the curve, with the number of foreign-born people increasing linearly over the years through the decade of 2010. However, in 2021 this number was 8.67 million.
