Over 6.5 Million Passengers Recorded at Poland’s Chopin Airport Since January
Last month alone, this airport recorded a remarkable number of passengers, with 1.5 million people using the airport, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
This figure represents 97 per cent of the total passengers seen in May 2019, which indicates a significant recovery in passenger numbers and suggests a return to pre-pandemic levels.
Data provided by the airport also revealed that out of the total of 6,525,980 passengers handled, 5.9 million passengers travelled internationally, while 623,000 passengers travelled domestically.
In addition, a majority of passengers at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport travelled within the Schengen zone, accounting for 63 per cent of the total passengers. On the other hand, 37 per cent of passengers chose non-EU countries within the Schengen area.
During May of this year, the same also saw a significant increase in passengers on charter flights compared to the same period in 2019, with a 20 per cent rise.
Furthermore, the top five destinations passengers chose since the beginning of 2023 were:
- London
- Paris
- Amsterdam
- Frankfurt
- Dubai
These popular destinations highlight the airport’s connectivity with major European cities and global hubs.
Being the largest airport in Poland, Chopin Airport in Warsaw serves as a crucial transportation hub. Last year, the airport recorded over 14.4 million travellers, demonstrating its significant role in facilitating air travel and contributing to the country’s overall aviation industry.
According to data from the airport, in 2019, it welcomed 18,860,000 passengers, thus representing a 6.2 per cent increase in passenger traffic compared to the previous year.
However, in 2020, due to the Coronavirus crisis and the impact of travel restrictions and reduced demand, Warsaw Airport registered a significant decrease in passenger numbers, with 5,473,224 passengers.
Meanwhile, a year later, the airport saw a recovery in passenger traffic, handling 7,473,734 passengers. Although still below the 2019 levels, this represents an improvement compared to the previous year.
Warsaw’s Chopin Airport, also known as Lotnisko Chopina w Warszawie, is Poland’s most significant and busiest airport. It is located in the W?ochy district of Warsaw, approximately ten kilometres southwest of the city centre. Besides, the top five international destinations from WAW Airport are London (Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton), Paris (Charles de Gaulle), Kyiv (Boryspil and Zhuliany), Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
