Poland Tightens Visa Policies to Curb Abuse and Irregular Migration
Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Henryka Mościcka-Dendys, has confirmed that the country has significantly restricted access to national visas, citing growing concerns over misuse. She explained that the primary reason behind this move is to prevent the abuse of Poland’s previously lenient visa system.
According to Mościcka-Dendys, Poland had become one of the easiest gateways to the EU for foreign nationals. However, this openness was increasingly exploited, leading to a spike in irregular migration. As a result, the Polish government has implemented stricter visa issuance policies to reinforce border control and reduce pressure on its migration infrastructure.
Poland Strengthens Efforts to Control Migration Flows
Despite various preventative measures already in place, Poland remains among the EU countries experiencing a high volume of irregular migrants. In response, the government has spent the past 18 months developing a new migration policy aimed at improving entry monitoring and enhancing national security.
Deputy Minister Mościcka-Dendys emphasized that the policy reforms are intended to help authorities better regulate who enters the country and under what conditions.
Tighter Rules for International Students
As part of these broader efforts, Poland has also introduced stricter visa requirements for international students. Last week, the Polish Senate approved legislative amendments that require all foreign applicants seeking to study in Poland to demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of instruction for their academic program.
Authorities believe this move will help reduce the risk of student visas being misused for irregular migration. It also seeks to prevent educational institutions from accepting ineligible candidates in exchange for financial incentives, a practice that has raised concerns in recent years.
These latest changes underscore Poland’s continued commitment to ensuring that visa pathways are used responsibly and in line with EU principles.
