Porto Welcomes Millions of Passengers Yearly Despite Being Considered the Most Dangerous City of Portugal
Even though Portugal is among the safest European countries, there are some areas where international tourists should take caution, according to Express UK, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The same shows that, based on the figures provided by Numbeo statistics, Porto is considered the most dangerous city in Portugal, after it has over average levels of crime and surpasses Lisbon when it comes to danger.
Among the most common crimes in this country, according to Numbeo, are corruption as well as drug dealing.
In this regard, a previous report published by TravelSafe noted that travellers in this city are subject to a medium risk of being scammed or pickpocketed in Porto.
Porto is also home to a large number of international students. According to the recent ranking of StudentsGoGlobal, Portugal’s city of Porto has been ranked in the first position as Europe’s most affordable city for international students.
The recent figures provided by Portugal’s National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that Porto airport handled a total of 5.52 million travellers in the first half of this year, which is a 335.0 per cent increase compared to the figures of the same period last year.
In addition, it has been reported that the rail industry is looking at Porto as the adequate gateway for high-speed rail as well as sleeper services into Portugal.
Despite the fact that Portugal has been highly affected by the COVID-related restriction, the situation in the country’s travel and tourism sector has marked a notable improvement.
Besides, according to the figures provided by INE, there have been a total of 24.3 million passengers at the country’s airports in the first half of this year, which is a 344 per cent increase compared to the same period last year figures.
The report also noted that about 80 per cent of passengers who landed in Portugal in June came from other countries, against a total of 70 per cent registered in the same month last year, with the majority of them or 68.5 per cent coming from elsewhere in Europe.
“In June 2022, there was an average daily landing of 95,900 passengers at [Portugal’s] airports (87,100 in the previous month), approaching the value observed in June 2019 (98,100),” the statement published by INE reads.
However, due to strikes, authorities in Portugal have called on passengers to avoid travelling to Portugal from August 19 until August 21.
