Portugal Will Not End Its CPLP Residence Permit, AIMA Confirms
It was previously said that this type of residence permit would be cancelled, raising concerns among many nationals of the CPLP countries.
However, AIMA stressed that there is no indication that the CPLP residence permit will end, assuring everyone who holds this document that they will continue to be able to legally reside in Portugal, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
As Diário de Notícias explains, the documents issued to CPLP countries nationals are valid until June 30, 2024, even if they have previously expired.
However, this does not mean that the scheme will not be abolished, as Portugal will continue to issue residence permits to this group of people under the Mobility Agreement.
New Government Responsible to Make a Plan for Renewing Documents
Regarding the renewal of the documents, it has been noted that the new government will now be responsible for making a plan to renew them.
According to Diário de Notícias, to apply changes to the law, the PSD party needs to take matters into its own hands. Nonetheless, it would also need support from the other parties.
One of the parties, Chega party, has already wanted to cancel the CPLP residence permit benefits. On the other hand, some others have said that there is no need for such a decision as the country already has limitations for those holding the document.
In line with the current rules that Portugal has, CPLP residence permit holders are entitled to one entry to Portugal for education, health, and work purposes, among others. The CPLP residence permit costs €15 and is initially valid for one year.
Nonetheless, this document does not permit nationals of the CPLP countries to enter the other Schengen Are member states visa-free.
Those who enter Portugal on a CPLP resilience permit need to hold a Schengen visa issued by any of the member states in order to be able to enter the area.
Portugal Said CPLP Mobility Agreement Is Fully Compatible With Schengen Area Regime
Last year, the Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal, Tiago Antunes, said that the CPLP Mobility Agreement regime and the Schengen Area regime are fully compatible.
Such a statement from Antunes came after the Commission decided to launch infringement procedures against Portugal.
However, despite this, Antunes stressed that CPLP citizens will continue to be subject to facilitated rules when applying for visas.
