Renew Europe Group Applauds Deal to Reform Asylum and Migration Policy
Calling it a momentous deal, the group said that the agreement, which comes from an initiative of the Renew Europe group, marks a significant step forward in achieving an asylum and migration system built on solidarity and responsibility, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
According to the group, progress in legislative files that would bring a long-term sustainable solution to the future crisis has been blocked for too long. Nonetheless, it was noted that the agreement is only the beginning of the solution.
Renew Europe highlighted that leaders from the Member States, as well as EU institutions, now need to go beyond words and accelerate their effort to finalise and implement the asylum and migration reform by 2024.
Commenting on the deal, Renew Europe Coordinator in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee, MEP Sophie in ’t Veld, said that the authorities, including MEPs, need to get down to work and make sure that an agreement on the package will be reached before the end of this term.
“For the first time in seven years, there seems to be a window of opportunity to unblock the asylum and migration file. Not a minute too soon, as we have to deliver for the citizens. We have agreed on the way forward, now we have to get down to work and make sure the package will be agreed before the end of this term,” the statement of Veld reads.
Member of the LIBE Committee, rapporteur of the Asylum procedures regulation and shadow rapporteur on the Asylum and migration management regulation, MEP Fabienne Keller, also reacted to the deal.
Keller said that political leaders need to take responsibility as well as achieve a long-desired reform in the EU.
Populists and extremists feed on the failure of the Union to manage the migration at EU external borders and provide for a strong common asylum system based on efficiency and solidarity. Fundamental rights are at stake; let’s build a policy in line with our humanitarian values,” Keller added.
The roadmap to mark an agreement that sets out how to finalise the Commons European Asylum System was signed by the European Parliament and the European Council.
The Commission explained that the pact provides the approach needed to manage migration effectively. Moreover, the pact aims to put in place a comprehensive and sustainable policy that proves a long-term response to the irregular migration challenges.
