Russians Are Second Top Schengen Visa Applicants From Asia for 2022 Despite Sanctions
According to AtoZSerwisPlus.com, Russia is the second-leading country in visa applications filed from North Asia and the whole Asian continent for 2022, accounting for 15.2 per cent of all applications lodged in 2022.
Russian nationals made 678,239 requests for Schengen visas last year, which is the highest number of applications filed from North Asia, the whole Asian continent, and also one of the leading nationalities to file for visas to Germany in the last five years.
While Turks had the highest application rates, they also had a higher rejection rate compared to countries in other regions – 15.7 per cent, falling only behind India, which had a rejection rate of 18.3 per cent or 121,188 declined visa applications. The total number of rejected applicants from Turkiye reached 120,876, compared to 645,842 approved applicants.
Schengen Statistics show that India was the leading country of origin for visa applications filed from the South Asian region in 2022 and the third country in the Asian continent. In total, 671,928 applications were filed, and 541,094 or 81.7 per cent of requests were approved.
Thai nationals were the fourth-largest nationality with the most visa applications filed in 2022 – a total of 208,356, also placing this nationality as the main applicant for the Southeast Asian region. On the other hand, Thais, with Kazakhs, had one of the lowest rejection rates – only 8.20 per cent of visa applicants received a negative response.
Visa applications from Central Asian countries were led by Kazakhstan applicants, with a total of 106,097 applications, also making this country the fifth-largest country of origin for visa applicants for the year.
Despite having the largest number of applicants from East Asia – 92,780 applications compared to 15,107 from Mongolia, which had the second-highest number of applicants for 2022, China is listed as the sixth-largest origin country of visa applicants for the year.
The recognition rate of applications filed by Chinese was high – 90.7 per cent, accounting for almost 80,000 visas issued in 2022. However, comparing this year’s data to the previous years and also in proportion with the 1.4 billion population, application rates by Chinese nationals have plummeted. One of the reasons for this result can be related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as during the COVID-19 years, namely 2019, 2020, and 2021, the application rates by Chinese dropped by 90.6 per cent.
