Spanish Government to Invest €35 Million in Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Heritage for Tourist Use
In a statement issued on May 30, the Government also stressed that this investment is part of the Modernization and Competitiveness Plan for the European-funded tourism sector, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
“The objective is to improve the capacity of the rich historical and cultural heritage of Spain throughout the territory to continue attracting both national and international tourists,” the statement reads.
According to the Government, the Ministry of Culture and Sports will be ready to monitor these ten projects in different cities, which are of cultural and tourist interest, with direct implications for the cultural, environmental, and economic sustainability of the environments where they are located.
“On the one hand, €15 million will be allocated to the reform and enhancement of state-owned museums and transferred management of Cáceres and Tarragona, both World Heritage. Specifically, €7 million will be allocated to the Tarragona Museum and 8 million to the Cáceres Museum,” the statement also explains.
In addition, €4,720,040.96 will be allocated for the restoration and consolidation of castles and public walls, which are declared Assets of cultural interest and tourist interest.
The castles that will also be consolidated are of Sagunto (Valencia), Adsubia (Alicante), and Santed (Zaragoza).
On the other hand, some parts of the wall of Zamora and the city wall of Burgo de Osma (Soria) will be restored.
According to the Government, €15,279,959 will be allocated for the Landscape of Light in Madrid, which last year was declared a World Heritage site. Meanwhile, €8.5 million will be invested in the rehabilitation projects of the National Library.
In this regard, the Government also reveals that €5,687,000 will be donated to rehabilitation aid at the Museum of the Reina Sofía National Art Center (headquarters and the Palacio de Velázquez-Parque del Retiro) and €1,092,959.04 at the National Meadow Museum.
The Government has added that all these actions taken will have to be completed before the end of the second quarter of 2026 in order to be in line with the Recovery, Transformation, and Resistance Plan.
For many tourists, the Spanish historical heritage remains a key element of their journey. Of the trips made in 2019, approximately 14.5 million have been made for cultural purposes.
However, in Spain, there are about 17,199 assets of cultural interest that are scattered throughout the Spanish geography and especially in rural or inland areas.
