Swiss Population to Reach Almost 9 Million This Year, Around 20% of Them 65 and Older
Meanwhile, as of January 1 of this year, the population of Switzerland was estimated to be 8,824,554 people. This is an increase of 1.16 per cent or 101,277 people compared to the above population, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) also reveals that regarding this population, one woman in five and one man in six were aged over 64 years. Such data show that Switzerland had 162 more centenarians than last year.
The same source also pointed out that in 2021 the natural increase was positive, as the number of births exceeded the number of deaths by 18,581. The increase also came due to out-migration, and the population increased by 82,697.
In this regard, the gender ratio of the total population was 0.968 or 968 men for 1000 women, which means that it is lower than the global gender ratio. In addition, the data shows that the global sex ratio in the world was approximately 1,016 males to 1,000 females as of 2021.
Furthermore, the FSO has predicted that by the end of 2022, the population of Switzerland will increase by 102,453 people and reach 8,927,007 at the beginning of 2023. Natural growth is also expected to be positive, as the number of births will exceed the number of deaths by 18,796.
According to the data, if external migration remains at last year’s level, the population will increase by 83,657 due to migration. However, as the FSO explains, the number of people who are not native to Switzerland and decide to be permanent residents will prevail over the number of people who leave the country to settle permanently in another country.
Meanwhile, estimates also show that the daily rates of change in Switzerland’s population in 2022 will be as follows:
- 248 live births on average per day (10.32 in an hour)
- 196 deaths on average per day (8.17 in an hour)
- 229 immigrants on average per day (9.55 in an hour)
As of the beginning of 2022, Switzerland had the following population age distribution:
- 15.2 per cent of the population under 15
- 67.8 per cent of the population between 15 and 64 years old
- 17 per cent of the population 65+
In absolute numbers, it is estimated that 1,343,362 young people are under the age of 15, which means 696,346 men and 647,016 women.
On the other hand, out of 5,985,342 people between 15 and 64 years old, there are 3,017,644 men and 2,967,698 women. Meanwhile, 1,495,850 people over the age of 64 include 627,249 men and 868,513 women.
