Visa Rejections in 2024 Resulted in €145 Million Losses for Applicants
Applicants Lost €145 Million on Rejected Schengen Visa Applications in 2024
In 2024, Schengen countries saw a surge in visa applications, receiving a total of 11.7 million requests, a 13.4% increase compared to the 10.3 million applications filed in 2023. However, this rise also came with a significant financial burden for applicants, particularly those whose visa requests were denied.
Visa Rejections Cost Applicants €145 Million
Due to the elevated number of rejections, applicants lost approximately €145 million on 1.7 million rejected visa applications. This figure marks an 11% increase in losses, or €14.3 million more than in 2023, when rejected applications cost applicants around €130 million.
The increase in application costs is partly attributed to the EU raising the Schengen visa fee to €90 as of June 11, 2024. For calculation purposes, an average application fee of €85 was used, representing the blended cost between the old €80 fee and the new €90 rate.
EU Revenue from Visa Applications Surpasses €995 Million
With over 11.7 million applications submitted at an average cost of €85, the EU generated €995.9 million in revenue from visa applications in 2024. This marks a 20.5% increase compared to €826 million in 2023.
While the total revenue rose, the share of losses from rejected applications slightly decreased, from 15.8% in 2023 to 14.5% in 2024, even though the absolute value increased.
