Canary and Balearic Islands Receive the Highest Passengers Volumes in Spain
According to one of the most recent press releases issued by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism of Spain, the Canary and the Balearic Islands welcomed the highest number of travellers in June, approaching the pre-pandemic figures.
The majority of travellers who visited the Canary and Balearic Islands in June were from the United Kingdom. British tourists represent one in four passengers that visited the islands in June 2022, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
“The Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are clearly leading the recovery of international travellers, undoubtedly favoured by the return this 2022 of the British tourists, who represent one in four passengers. Our islands are thus approaching the pre-pandemic figures at the start of the high season for which we have really encouraging prospects, even in the current context of rising prices,” Tourism Minister, Reyes Maroto, said.
The high number of arrivals from the UK had a positive impact on all autonomous communities of Spain, especially on the Balearic Islands.
It has been disclosed that the majority of UK travellers who reached Spain (8 per cent of them) flew with a low-cost airline.
As for the overall data, the Ministry said that the Spanish airports received 2,079,084 passengers from the UK, reaching 83.6 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels.
Apart from travellers from the UK, Spain welcomed travellers from other countries too. Data show that Spain welcomed more than 8.2 million passengers in June, which is over three times more than in the same period last year.
The UK is followed by Germany with 1,322,410 passengers, who mainly chose to visit the Balearic Islands. In addition, it was noted that the recovery degree of this market compared to 2019 is 87.2 per cent.
The third country with the highest number of travellers that decided to visit Spain is Italy. A total of 716,042 passengers from Italy reached Spain in June, and eight out of ten of them flew on low-cost airlines.
Another 647,834 passengers visited Spain from France, reaching 95.2 per cent of the 2019 levels.
Previously, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reported that tourism remains a top job generator in Spain. The tourism sector continued to create the most jobs in June, with over 331,000 more people employed compared to the same period last year.
The Tourism Institute of Spain, Turespana, said that the employment in the country surpassed 2.6 million workers last month.
