

Greece: Increase in Tourist Arrivals Led to Significant Surge in Tourism Revenues in May
Such conclusions have been reached through the recent report of the Bank of Greece (BoG), AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
In addition, the same source shows that the inbound in traveller flows rose by a total of 672.5 per cent in May this year and by 552.9 per cent for a period from January until May; thus, tourism-related revenues increased to 1.41 billion euros in May this year, against 222 million euros in the same period last year, and to a total of 2.5 million euros in January-May period.
However, despite the notable increase, the figures are still below the pre-pandemic levels. More specifically, travel receipts were down by 9.7 per cent in May this year, and 12.2 per cent in the first months of this year, while the average spending per trip was also down by 2.2 per cent, according to BoG figures.
The same source also shows that in May, the 536.4 per cent year-on-year increase in travel receipts was generated by a receipt from residents of the European Union, up by 426.4 per cent to a total of 827.9 million euros, and by non-EU travellers up by 807.5 per cent to a total of 54.4 million euros over 60.2 million euros in May last year.
According to the report, the following key source markets stimulated revenues in Greece in May this year:
- Germany- up by 501.7 per cent to 331.0 million euros
- France – up by 335.6 per cent to 121.5 million euros
- The United Kingdom up by 1.7075 per cent to 243.9 million euros
- The United States- up by 1.162.4 per cent to 113.0 million euros
At the same time, in the first five months of this year, the 547.9 per cent surge in travel receipts to a total of 2.508.7 million euros over 2021 was generated by Germans, whose spending was up by 511.9 per cent to a total of 508.3 million euros, French citizens up by 513.9 per cent to 221.4 million euros, Britons up by 1.479.7 per cent to 365.3 million euros, the Americans by 1.395.3 per cent to 179.7 million euros the Russians by 275.8 per cent to 7.9 million euros.
Greece has opened its doors to a large number of international tourists this year. Besides, the country’s Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias recently said that the country expects to welcome 5.7 million visitors to Athens by air in the second half of this year.
