

Number of Persons That Immigrated to Germany in 2020 Down by 24%, Federal Office of Statistics Reveals
The Federal Office of Statistics of Germany, Destatis, reveals that in 2019, the country registered around 1,559,000 arrivals from abroad.
On the other hand, only one year after, in 2020, Germany registered around 1,187,000 arrivals from abroad, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The number of persons emigrating from Germany was also down in 2020. Destatis shows that in 2019, around 1,232,000 persons emigrated from Germany, whereas in 2020, around 966,000 persons emigrated from Germany. This means that the country registered a decrease of 22 per cent, year on year.
“In 2020, the first COVID-19 year, the number of people immigrating from abroad to Germany was down by 24 per cent, and that of people emigrating from Germany down 22 per cent, year on year,” the statement of the Federal Office of Statistics reads.
The Office disclosed that the changes in migration patterns were mainly pronounced among young adults between the age of 18 and 22. In addition, the same revealed that the arrivals across the borders of Germany were down by 32 per cent, and the departures were down by 28 per cent.
Data pertaining to 2021 are yet to be revealed. However, it is believed that the number will be somewhat similar to those in 2019.
As for the number of immigrants in Germany in 2020 by country of origin, Statista shows that Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, and Italy are at the top of the table. In 2020, a total of 185,296 Romanian nationals immigrated to Germany.
During the same year, 101,220 Polish nationals, 72,400 Bulgarian nationals, and 43,178 Italian nationals immigrated to Germany. Nationals of other countries, such as Turkey, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, India, and the US, are also part of the top ten list.
Previously, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reported that the asylum application rates in Germany increased by around 13 per cent this year. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees revealed that 44,908 first-time asylum applications were submitted until mid-April, with 14,135 of them being filed in March alone.
Taking into account such figures, the Federal Office for Migration said that the number of persons seeking international protection in Germany increased by 12.9 per cent.
From another perspective, the figures suggest that the number of people living in Germany who have a ‘migrant background’ keeps on increasing.
