It involves placing qualified welders with UK employers across offshore oil and gas, offshore wind, nuclear power plant construction and maintenance, shipbuilding, structural steelwork, and industrial manufacturing. The UK has one of the most active offshore energy welding markets in the world and a substantial nuclear programme.
Why are welders in demand in the UK?
Hinkley Point C in Somerset — the UK's first new nuclear station in decades — is one of the largest construction projects in Europe, requiring thousands of coded welders for reactor component installation, pressure-vessel fabrication, and structural steelwork. Sizewell C is in planning. Offshore wind — Dogger Bank (the world's largest), Hornsea, Moray, and dozens of others — requires monopile foundation and transition-piece welding. North Sea oil and gas platforms require coded pipe and structural welders for modification and maintenance. BAE Systems, Babcock, and Cammell Laird build naval and specialist vessels requiring marine-qualified welders. Post-Brexit reduction in EU labour supply has created a structural gap across all these sectors.
EU citizens no longer have free movement rights in the UK. EU nationals — like all non-UK/Irish nationals — need a visa to work in the UK. The primary route for qualified welders is the Skilled Worker visa. The employer must be a licensed Home Office sponsor, and welding occupations appear on the Skilled Occupations list.
The Skilled Worker visa replaced Tier 2 (General) in December 2020. The employer provides a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS); the worker applies online, providing the CoS reference, qualifications, and English-language evidence. Processing takes 3–8 weeks from application. The visa grants permission to remain for up to five years and can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after that period.
No. The Common Travel Area (CTA) between the UK and Ireland means Irish citizens can live and work in the UK without a visa or permit. Irish welders are the only EU nationals who retain free-movement-equivalent rights in the UK post-Brexit.
BS EN ISO 9606-1 (steels) and BS EN ISO 9606-2 (aluminium) are the primary standards. CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Welding and Inspection Personnel), managed by TWI (The Welding Institute), is a specifically UK-recognised qualification scheme — CSWIP 3.1 (Welding Inspector) and coded welder qualifications are widely respected by UK employers. Nuclear welding at Hinkley Point C follows RCC-M (EDF's French nuclear construction code) and ASME Section III requirements. Offshore welding requires DNV or Bureau Veritas classification-society qualification and BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) for offshore access. AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX qualifications are accepted by many employers.
FCAW (136/138) is widely used in offshore and structural steelwork. MIG/MAG (135/136) covers general fabrication and structural work. TIG (141) is essential for nuclear stainless-steel pipe and pharmaceutical process-plant welding. SAW (121) is used in heavy offshore-foundation fabrication. Orbital TIG is used in pharmaceutical and semiconductor process-plant installation.
Qualified welders earn approximately GBP 30,000 to GBP 50,000 per year gross. Offshore welders working rotation schedules, nuclear-site coded welders, and specialist pipe welders earn toward the top and significantly above. Offshore welders on day-rate contracts typically earn GBP 300–600 per day. London pays a significant premium for construction welding.
Income tax administered by HMRC through PAYE: 0% on the first GBP 12,570 (Personal Allowance); 20% from GBP 12,571 to GBP 50,270; 40% from GBP 50,271 to GBP 125,140; 45% above that. National Insurance Contributions (NICs) add 8% on earnings between GBP 12,570 and GBP 50,270. The effective combined deduction for most welders is approximately 28–36%.
The UK has no statutory minimum overtime rate — the National Living Wage applies to all hours worked. In practice, the applicable JIB or sectoral agreement and most employment contracts set overtime at 150% for weekday overtime and 200% for Sunday and public-holiday work.
5.6 weeks (28 days for a five-day-week worker) as the statutory minimum under the Working Time Regulations 1998. Most employers in offshore, nuclear, and construction provide 25 days plus bank holidays.
Aberdeen and the North Sea coast have offshore oil and gas welding — the largest offshore welding market in Europe. Somerset (Hinkley Point C) has nuclear construction welding. Barrow-in-Furness (BAE Systems nuclear submarines) and Rosyth (Babcock naval) have naval welding. London, Birmingham, and Leeds have structural and construction welding. Scottish waters and the English Channel coast have offshore wind installation welding.
CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Welding and Inspection Personnel) is administered by TWI (The Welding Institute), which is one of the world's leading welding research and certification bodies. CSWIP 3.1 (Welding Inspector) is highly valued by UK employers as a mark of welding-quality assurance competence. For offshore and nuclear work, holding a CSWIP qualification alongside coded EN ISO 9606 or ASME qualifications significantly strengthens a welder's profile in the UK market.
Offshore workers in the UK North Sea require: BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training), including helicopter underwater escape training (HUET); MIST (Minimum Industry Safety Training); a valid offshore medical; and any platform operator-specific inductions. These are mandatory for all offshore site access.
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Welding, Flame Cutting, and Allied Processes regulations, and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 govern welding safety. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) enforces compliance. Hot-work permits, fume extraction to COSHH standards, respiratory protective equipment (RPE), and fire-watch procedures are mandatory.
Yes — and it is one of the most acute in the UK labour market. The ECA, EEF (Make UK), and TWI all report significant unfilled welding vacancies. Post-Brexit loss of EU labour supply, combined with offshore wind, nuclear, and naval construction programmes, has created a structural gap.
Yes. All legally employed workers are entitled to the National Living Wage, the applicable sectoral agreement rates, 5.6 weeks' annual leave, sick-pay entitlements, and unfair-dismissal protection after two years' service.
