Armenia Work Visa

To work legally in Armenia as a non-EAEU foreign national, you generally need two documents: a work permit (applied for by your employer through Armenia's official online platform aworkpermit. amm, managed by the Migration and Citizenship Service) and a Temporary Residence Permit / Temporary Resident Card (applied for by the employee after the work permit is approved). These are separate but linked — the work permit is the basis for the Temporary Residence Permit.

Armenia's official e-visa system is operated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia through evisa.mfa.am. Many nationalities can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days, but a visa-free entry alone does not entitle a person to work legally in Armenia.

Important: According to Armenia's Law on Foreigners and the Migration and Citizenship Service (workpermit.am), the employer must register with the Migration and Citizenship Service (workpermit. am). The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MLSA) conducts a Labour Market Test to verify that no qualified Armenian citizen is available for the role before approving the permit.

Types of Armenian Work Permits and Visas

Work Permit / Residence Permit Types

  • Work-Based Temporary Residence Permit (Standard): The most common route for foreign employees hired by Armenian-registered companies. Upon approval, the employee receives a combined work and residence card. This single plastic document serves as both a work authorisation and a temporary residence permit, valid for up to 1 year and renewable annually for up to 4 years.
  • EAEU Citizen Registration: Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan are fully exempt from work permit requirements under the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union. They register on Workpermit. I am for a certificate of legal residence.
  • Special Residence Permit (Ethnic Armenian): For persons of Armenian origin living abroad. Provides accelerated residency and employment rights.
  • Permanent Residence Permit: Available after meeting residency requirements through family-based, entrepreneurship, investment, or ethnic Armenian pathways. Time on a work-based permit counts toward the residence requirement.
  • Work Entry Visa: A visa category for visa-required nationals who must obtain a work entry visa before travelling to Australia for employment. Valid up to 120 days, single or multiple eEntry

Visa Types

  • E-Visa (evisa.mfa.am): Armenia's official electronic visa, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Available online for most nationalities. Valid for up to 120 days.
  • Work/Economic Activity Visa: For foreign nationals entering Armenia for work or economic activity. An IssEntry is a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 1 year.
  • Visa-Free Entry (180 days): Citizens of many countries, including the USA, EU member states, and the UK, can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days per year. This does not grant the right to work without a work permit.
  • Transit Visa: For transiting through Armenia.

Armenia Work Permit Requirements

To apply for an Armenian Work-Based Temporary Residence Permit, the following documents are required, as specified by the Armenian Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MLSA) and Migration and Citizenship Service (workpermit.am):

  • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
  • Work Permit Application: Filed by the employer through the official online platform at workpermit .am. The employer must register on the platform as a legal entity before submitting.
  • Employment Contract: A signed contract from an Armenian-registered employer specifying the role, salary, and duration of employment.
  • Academic and Professional Certificates: Diplomas and professional qualifications relevant to the role. Copies must be notarially certified by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the country of origin, and then certified by the Armenian Embassy or Consulate of that country in Armenia.
  • Criminal Record Certificate: A clean criminal record from your home country.
  • Medical Certificate: Confirming fitness to perform the required work, where required.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Evidence of registered address in Armenia.
  • Work Permit Fee: AMD 25,000 (approximately USD 65), paid by the employer on behalf of the company.
  • Temporary Residence Permit Fee: AMD 105,000 (approximately USD 275), paid after the work permit is approved.

Steps to Apply for an Armenian Work Permit and Residence Permit

  1. Secure a job offer from an Armenian employer. Find a position and receive a signed Career Employment contract or official offer letter. Use platforms like Job. am, Career. am, LinkedIn, or apply directly to international companies operating in Armenia. I am notifying the MLSA of the vacancy.   2. Labour Market Test is completed. The MLSA reviews whether any qualified Armenian citizen is available for the role. If the MLSA refers Armenian candidates, the employer must interview them and provide valid reasons if they are not suitable. If no candidates are found or all are rejected, the employer can proceed with the work permit application.
  3. Employer files the work permit application on WorkPermit. am. The employer submits the work permit application through the official online platform, including the employment contract, employee qualifications, and company registration documents. The Migration and Citizenship Service and National Security Service review the application within 5 working days. The full decision is issued within 30 days. Work permit fee: AMD 25,000 (~USD 65), paid by the employer.
  4. Employee applies for a Temporary Residence Permit/Resident Card. After the work permit is approved, the employee applies for the Temporary Residence Permit at the Migration and Citizenship Service. Fee: AMD 105,000 (~USD 275). Processing takes 30–45 days. The plastic Temporary Resident Card is collected in person at the Joint Office of Public Services at Vazgen Sargsyan 3, Yerevan.
  5. Entry into Armenia (if outside the country). If the foreign national is outside Armenia, they enter using an e-visa (evisa.mfa.am) or, if their nationality qualifies, visa-free. Visa-required nationals must first obtain a Work Entry Visa before travelling to Armenia.
